RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT METRICS AND THE BOTTOM LINE

Many technology companies involved in developing marketable products are founded on groundbreaking research. As such, continued Research and Development (R&D) activity can be critical for success. A healthy bottom line is also important for a company to succeed. An important question is how to measure the effect of R&D on a company's bottom line. In this column, I take a look at a study that shows that in several industries, R&D metrics are not standardized and therefore difficult to tie to the bottom line. But rather than viewing a disjoint between R&D and the bottom line as a problem, we should view it as an opportunity to use data mining to reconcile R&D activity with bottom line concerns.
