Several Telecommunications Companies Select Sybase

Delivering on its commitment to the telecommunications industry, Sybase Inc announced sales of Sybase Industry Warehouse Studio (IWS) to numerous fixedline and mobile telecommunications companies across the world. The Telecommunications version of Industry Warehouse Studio gives companies a distinct advantage in the competitive telecommunications market by providing analytical CRM capabilities that can be implemented successfully within a short time period.

Companies who have recently purchased the solution include: Telecel (Portugal), Matav (Hungary), Telenet (Belgium), Telia (Sweden), and Moblix (Denmark). In addition, a major North American telecommunications company and a regional Asian provider have purchased the IWS telco product. Initial response to the product has been enthusiastic, since most companies lack the time or experience to effectively design and implement their own business intelligence solutions, and Industry Warehouse Studios is a full-design solution that can be quickly implemented to track and report customer, product and market trends and conditions.

Moblix had made several failed attempts at building their own data warehouse to gain access to core customer data before selecting Industry Warehouse Studio. Having decided to rethink the entire project, Mobilix evaluated vendor solutions and selected the Sybase Telco Industry Warehouse Studio. According to Steen Vingaard Larsen, GIS and data warehouse manager for Denmark's major mobile phone operator, "We looked at several vendors who could probably have delivered a result eventually, given enough time and money; but time is something we just didn't have. We didn't see anyone out there who would give us the same skills, time-scales and end benefits as Sybase's business intelligence solutions."

"The Industry Warehouse Studio models mean that there is no waste of time or effort in trying to work out how to structure the warehouse. It is based on analysis we need to do in our industry. We definitely see this as the best way of kick-starting a data warehouse. You get results in a very short period of time rather than the six years we know that one of our competitors has already spent trying to develop their data warehouse," Larsen said.

Sybase Industry Warehouse Studio delivers an integrated suite of applications that provide industry-specific business intelligence solutions. The applications allow customers to rapidly implement customer, market and product analysis using heterogeneous data sources.

"The IWS telecommunications solution is building momentum based on the economic value of shortening the time of deployment for these esoteric OLAP projects," said Pete Taglia, vice president of telecommunications and media solutions at Sybase. "The next breakthrough will occur when we have achieved a critical mass of pre-defined sources which will further reduce the time of deployment by another order of magnitude. The whole idea is to shorten the customer's time to realizing benefits from these important customer facing or network facing projects."

The momentum for Industry Warehouse Studio is expected to continue. "We have emerged in a very short period as a major power in the burgeoning telecommunications sector in Europe," said Sean Kelly, general manager for Sybase Business Intelligence in Europe. "Judging from the pipeline we are confident that we will have secured 10 reference sites for the telecommunications Industry Warehouse Solution by its first anniversary."
