PBS Selects Quest's SharePlex for Oracle DB Replication

Quest Software Inc, announced that the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has chosen Quest's SharePlex for Oracle database replication solution to help ensure 24x7 availability for their shopPBS E-Commerce site, their Oracle enterprise resource planning (ERP) application and their Oracle-based PBS Home Video sales and marketing system.

PBS will use SharePlex to implement a "live" standby database. It can alleviate potential processing bottlenecks that can occur on a primary database by providing users with a secondary, up-to-the-minute source for querying and reporting tasks that will increase information accessibility. In the event of a production database failure, SharePlex can eliminate downtime for PBS's database users because they can be automatically switched over to that alternate replicated system.

"We were looking for a replication solution that would provide us with a hot standby database, and SharePlex really hits that target," said Ken Walters, senior manager of database operations for PBS. "With the other solution we looked into, there were problems with replicating certain data types and sequences, plus there was too much load placed on the system; it just didn't seem to compare to SharePlex. Since SharePlex offloads reporting and management jobs, we expect to see more efficient performance and improved load balancing between our production machine and standby database."

SharePlex is a high availability replication and scalability solution designed to improve response time and to reduce application downtime in critical e- business and enterprise transactions. Using a high-performance, low-overhead design, SharePlex provides accessible copies of the production database that may be used to off-load ad-hoc query and reporting tasks that degrade Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) response time, as well as provide a live standby database for disaster avoidance.
