PEGASUS UTILIZES CA'S NEUGENTS PREDICTIVE MGT SOLUTION

Computer Associates International Inc, a world-leader in mission-critical business software, announced that Pegasus Technologies, a subsidiary of KFX Inc, a leading developer of utility management solutions, is incorporating CA's ground-breaking Neugents technology to improve the efficiency of the power generating industry.

A main concern among power plant management is the inefficiencies in the combustion processes that add significant generator pollutants which degrade the environment and contribute to the problem of global warming. Through the utilization of CA's Neugents technology in conjunction with the suite of Pegasus products, power plant efficiency is dramatically increased and as a result, owners, utility operators, customers, and the environment reap enormous benefits.

CA's Neugents technology can be used on both the delivery and consumption ends of the power generation process. On the front end, power companies use Neugents based processes to optimize their processes and provide more electricity at reduced costs. On the back end, consumers use Neugents based software to monitor their homes and businesses and optimize the consumption of electricity by regulating systems and appliances.

Pegasus' Combustion Optimizer software facilitates on-line, real time closedloop management for utility companies. By utilizing CA's Neugents in conjunction with Optimizer, Pegasus has gained the capacity to continuously monitor and automatically adjust boiler operation to provide improved efficiency and environmental performance.

"We have demonstrated that neural nets are emerging as the heart of the systems that operate existing and future power plants," said Pegasus CEO Gary Nicholson. "Neugents is a perfect compliment to Pegasus and enables us to continue offering the utilities proven cutting edge solutions."

According to an industry survey, power plants employing full closed-loop control achieved NOx emission rate reductions as great as 60 percent, heat rate reductions of up to five percent, a five percent reduction in the amount of carbon remaining in the ash and significant savings in avoided capital expenditures.

Depending on cost and amount of fuel burned, heat rate reductions of even 1% can represent significant savings in fuel costs. Additionally, with less fuel consumed per kwh of electricity produced, the emission of other pollutants such as SO2 and CO2 are also reduced.

Additionally, approximately 50% of those utilities surveyed indicated that the installation of the predictive intelligence management technology allowed them to avoid much greater capital expenditures such as would be incurred with other NOx control technologies.

"We are confident that neural network technology is the least-cost, most efficient solution for cleaning up the environment," Theodore (Ted) Venner, president of Pegasus Technologies. "In an industry where a return on investment is generally 1-3 years, the payout for neural-based process optimization is often an unheard of 60-90 days."

"The sophistication of this end-to-end process is enhanced by the application of Neugents predictive management technologies that concurrently monitor a multitude of control points and calculate automation in split seconds," he added.

"By employing CA's Neugents technology to support Combustion Optimizer, Pegasus will deliver the most powerful solution power producers to dramatically increase efficiency and environmental conservation," said Nigel Turner, CA senior vice president, business management.

Neugents revolutionize enterprise management. By analyzing historical performance data, they accurately predict problems in advance and detect unusual system behavior, such as a 'denial of service' attack, that can effectively shut down your business. Neugents' predictive capabilities, combined with the unrivaled, integrated management capabilities of CA's Unicenter TNG enterprise management solution, allow you to achieve unmatched performance and availability, while improving staff efficiency and reducing operational cost. Now, for the first time, you have the power to prevent problems in your IT infrastructure instead of simply reacting to them after the damage is done.
