Sybase Announces Adaptive Server IQ Benchmarks

As part of its free test drive program, Sybase Inc announced the results from the second in a series of benchmarks to demonstrate the performance, scalability and data compression capabilities of Sybase Adaptive Server IQ with Multiplex (IQ-M), Sybase's flagship database for data warehousing, and to encourage potential users to evaluate the product for themselves. A free Developer's Edition of Adaptive Server IQ is available as part of the test drive program.

The 100 gigabyte benchmark of Adaptive Server IQ with Multiplex was performed on a Compaq 6400 running Windows NT 4.0 on a 450 megahertz Intel Pentium 2 processor, four CPUs and four gigabytes of memory. The benchmark replicated a typical business application of IQ-M.

"We were able to obtain superior performance and throughput using 18 percent less CPU speed versus other NT benchmarks. We were especially pleased that we were able to obtain 34 percent more throughput, while running simultaneous updates and user queries," said Frank Teklitz, senior group marketing manager, Sybase Business Intelligence Division. "Other vendors had to run their updates stand alone to enable reasonable performance, while at the same time locking out users from doing queries. Sybase recognizes that in this 24/7, Web-enabled world, businesses can rarely afford to lock out the user in order to update the data warehouse. This NT benchmark is only a starting point in our testing on NT. We are looking forward to extending this benchmark using IQ-M's full multiplexing capabilities."

Sybase Adaptive Server IQ with Multiplex is the only database specifically designed to support the needs of data warehousing. The IQ-M vertical storage architecture and patented column-based, Bit Wise Indexing technology delivers high performance ad-hoc access, data compression and unmatched data and user scalability, while enabling superior analytical flexibility and lower cost of maintenance. The scalability of IQ-M provides customers with the scalability, security and reliability of enterprise environments on an NT operating system for fraction of the cost.

"Sybase Adaptive Server IQ with Multiplex enables our customers to solve an entirely new generation of business problems. Today, most relational databases enable only a few users to ask a few questions," explains Paul Krneta, director of IQ with Multiplex, Sybase Business Intelligence Division. "With the data and user scalability of IQ with Multiplex, we can enable hundreds of users to ask hundreds of questions. This is critical for Web-enabled data warehouses, which must support huge volumes of click-stream data and hundreds of concurrent users."

Sybase is offering the Developer's version of Adaptive Server IQ for free to allow users to "test drive" the product and discover its performance for themselves.
