Legato Announces Serverless Backup for Oracle DB Users

Legato Systems Inc, a leader in enterprise storage management software, announces Legato Celestra Power 1.5 and the Legato Celestra Module for Oracle (CMO), the first product on the market to deliver the benefits of serverless backup to Oracle database users.

When implemented with Celestra Power 1.5, CMO automates backup at the file system level and provides hot and cold backup of tablespaces, archive logs and configuration files. Celestra Power 1.5 also delivers expanded platform support to include 64-bit mode for both Sun Solaris 7 and Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX 11.0. Legato also announced Celestra Power 2.0, with support for Windows NT, CMO on Windows NT, and Extended Copy.

"The phenomenal rise of e-business has resulted in the explosive growth of Web site data collection and the rapid adoption of the Oracle8i database," said Roger Choplin, vice president, data storage technologies, Oracle Corporation.

"The resulting demands for data protection, high performance applications and data availability lie at the heart of Oracle`s E-Business Continuity program and is what makes partners like Legato especially significant. Celestra Power`s serverless backup capability allows Oracle customers to maintain data integrity and protection without sacrificing application availability or performance."

Celestra Power is breakthrough software that delivers live, serverless, LANfree backup of mission-critical data, providing 24x7, high-performance accessibility for enterprise applications, in both Storage Area Network (SAN)- based and traditional storage environments.

Extended Copy Provides New Serverless Backup Option for SAN

With Celestra Power 2.0, Legato also adds support for the Extended Copy protocol, an open standard developed by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) that enables data to be moved directly from disk to tape by Celestra enabled SAN devices. Legato`s Celestra Consortium partners Chaparral Network Storage, Crossroads Systems, Gadzoox Networks, Overland Data and Pathlight Technologies, announced support for the Extended Copy protocol in their products. Celestra Power`s Extended Copy support is added to the existing Celestra Data Mover configuration, which allows Celestra to provide serverless backup for both SAN and traditional SCSI-based storage environments, by way of a third-party copy facility installed on a low-end workstation or server.

"With Legato Celestra Power, our e-Business customers can fully protect large amounts of data quickly and often, without impacting application performance," said Jim Chan, product manager, platform hosting, US West Hosting Solutions. "For customers with 24x7 uptime requirements, Celestra Power provides us with a powerful solution that will deliver significant gains in productivity and lower exposure in the event of data loss."

"Celestra Power enables fail-safe protection of tremendous amounts of data," said Steve Greenleaf of Lightyear Unidial, "with no significant reduction in LAN or server performance, eliminating the need for a backup window. Plus, Celestra Power scales to meet the needs of high-end storage environments, such as banking, telcos and e-commerce, who operate traditional SCSI, Fibre Channel, Network Attached Storage (NAS), and SANs."

Lightyear Unidial offers a national team of telecommunication consultants and customer service experts dedicated to one goal - helping customers build their businesses through the use of leading-edged, converged telecommunications services.

Celestra Power 2.0: The Only Enterprise-Class Serverless Backup

Support for Windows NT 4.0 makes Celestra Power 2.0 the first and only enterprise-class serverless backup solution that supports both UNIX and Windows NT environments. In addition, the new Celestra Power 2.0 supports CMO on Windows NT, delivering the industry's first product to support Oracle on NT.

Now, Oracle users can reap the benefits of live, serverless and LAN-free backup of mission critical data.

"With support for both UNIX and Windows NT, Oracle, and SAN/non-SAN storage environments," said Steve Duplessie, senior analyst at Enterprise Storage Group, "Legato is moving rapidly to deliver the benefits of serverless backup to a wide range of enterprise customers. Legato's Celestra Power technology promises to revolutionize the way these customers think about data protection."

"We look at Celestra Technology as a key part of our storage solutions," said Dr. Helmut Beck, vice president LoB Storage of Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "We want our customers to have access to their data at any time and from any location. The integration of Legato`s Celestra and NetWorker products in our Enterprise Storage Solutions will help to achieve this goal."

"High storage demands are placing increasing pressure on networks and data management," said Nora Denzel, senior vice president at Legato. "Legato is committed to delivering products and technologies that enable information continuance in heterogeneous IT environments. The enhancements we are making to our Celestra Power products will help us deliver on that commitment."

The Legato Information Continuum Celestra Power provides transparent data protection in the Legato Information Continuum which is designed to protect, move, and manage information. The Information Continuum model offers four levels of service based on an organization's information availability requirements. The first level is Standard Data Protection, often referred to as backup and recovery.

The second is Transparent Data Protection which allows `transparent` offhost backup and recovery of application hosts where availability requirements exceed the required backup window. The third level is Fault Resilience which adds the capability of automated response to various application - and data availability issues, minimizing the occurrence of planned or unplanned application service interruptions. The most advanced level, Continuous Operations, greatly extends an organization's solution to cope with site outage and to provide remote-site fail-over capabilities.
