SGI Chooses Objectivity/DB From Objectivity

Objectivity Inc, a leading provider of distributed, scalable object databases, announced that SGI, a leader in high-performance computing technology, has selected Objectivity/DB for use in designing their future products, reliably, quickly and economically.

SGI has created a standard set of tools to help them easily reuse existing designs in future products. They wanted to design complex systems, easily reuse data and share the responsibilities between all the disciplines involved. Additionally, they wanted to store records of component parts, ground rules and related connection information in a database. SGI developed their own Hierarchical Object Oriented Database System (HOODS) in which they store a particular hardware design in the Objectivity/DB database. Each container represents a component, such as a printed circuit board, multi-chip module or system, and associations are used to tie the components together. The SGI application makes extensive use of iterators to traverse designs and maps to get directly at components very efficiently for complex design checks. Future plans include tracking component versions using the Objectivity Versioning facility and data replication for multi-site use.

The benefit for SGI is that when a new piece of hardware is designed, they can reuse information from a previous design and thus save a large amount of labor cost and gain a competitive advantage by bringing products to market much more quickly.
