GoTo.com Chooses Quest's SharePlex for Oracle Software

Quest Software Inc announced that GoTo.com, the company that revolutionizes the way people and businesses search for products, services and information on the Internet, has installed Quest's SharePlex for Oracle software to replicate its Web content for use as a backup in the event of a primary database or system failure.

SharePlex is now a critical component in keeping the GoTo.com Web site online, according to Paul Ryan, vice president of engineering for GoTo.com. "Before SharePlex was installed, if the database server were to fail, we would have to go through a recovery procedure that takes up to 30 minutes -- a very costly scenario for our business," Ryan said. "With SharePlex, we have achieved a significant increase in uptime on load-balanced sets of servers, which provides more efficient transaction processing and will allow us to expand our information capacity without having to re-engineer our software applications."

GoTo.com provides e-commerce services to Web sites across the Internet, including Web site search, comparison shopping and auctions, and runs on Oracle databases. Since SharePlex provides a replica of all GoTo.com's Web content, users can query and perform reporting on the alternate system as if it were the primary system, thus distributing transaction processing over multiple servers for greater efficiency and better database utilization.

"We need to have a real-time copy of our Web content so our information is available to consumers at all times," added Ryan. "We chose SharePlex over other solutions because of its efficiency, especially for supporting large transaction volume. It is also very easy to configure and maintain."

SharePlex is an innovative log-based database replication product that enables users to replicate large volumes of database activity over networks. The replicated copy can be used as a fully open, viable Oracle instance that is transparent to end-users and does not consume high volumes of system and network resources. SharePlex allows system administrators to switch database users over to an identical database that is updated continuously, without waiting for a database recovery, which is especially important to e-business organizations that need 24x7 availability for their applications.
