Oracle Releases Oracle Internet Developer Suite

Oracle Corp, one of the largest providers of software for e-business, announced the immediate availability of the Oracle Internet Developer Suite, a complete suite containing all the functionality of widely adopted Oracle development products in one package. The new suite radically simplifies the way developers purchase development tools and build applications by offering a comprehensive tool set that addresses every aspect of e-business application development.

Based on the latest Internet standards including eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and Java, Oracle Internet Developer Suite includes Oracle JDeveloper, Oracle Portal, Oracle Forms Developer and Designer, alongside Oracle's business intelligence tools, Oracle Discoverer and Oracle Reports. Oracle is the first in the software industry to package and price business intelligence tools together with its mainstream programming tools.

The Oracle Internet Developer Suite is optimized for building applications that take full advantage of the powerful deployment capabilities of Oracle8i and the newly introduced Oracle internet Application Server (iAS). For Internet Software Vendors (ISVs) this is particularly good news. ISVs can now create one application that can be deployed against any Oracle iAS and Oracle8i implementation. ISVs no longer have to worry if the functionality will be there to support the application. The tools within Oracle Internet Developer Suite support a range of development approaches including visual modeling for diagramming business processes, Rapid Application Development (RAD) for quickly building transactional Java Web forms, and component-based development for assembling applications from pre-built e-business components.

"The requirement to analyze and understand customer and business information is driving the steady adoption of business intelligence tools," said Thomas Murphy, program director with META GROUP. "By including its business intelligence tools with Oracle Portal and its Java application development tools, Oracle can enable developer productivity in the creation of e-business applications."

Oracle Internet Developer Suite tools include:

  • Oracle Portal -- Oracle Portal is a browser-based software environment for building and deploying enterprise portals. The easy-to-use portal interface offers an organized, personalized view of the business information, Web content, and applications needed by each user.
  • Oracle JDeveloper -- Oracle JDeveloper with Oracle Business Components for Java is a full-featured Java programming tool that offers integrated support for building debugging, customizing, and reusing server-side business logic. JDeveloper provides a productive, wizard-based environment for building and deploying Java business components as JavaServer Pages (JSP), Servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans, or CORBA components.
  • Oracle Designer -- Oracle Designer provides a single design environment for developing enterprise applications by modeling them through an easy to use, graphical user interface. Its repository-driven approach allows components to be defined and used across a team of developers.
  • Oracle Forms -- Oracle Forms Developer offers a highly productive RAD development environment for building enterprise-class Internet applications. It provides an end-to-end application framework, including a set of integrated builders, re-entrant wizards, live previewers, and property palettes. Developers can quickly construct sophisticated, multilingual and highly interactive database forms, charts and business logic with minimal effort.
  • Oracle Discoverer (Admin. Edition) -- Oracle Discoverer is the easy-to-use ad hoc query and analysis tool for high-performance end-user access to information. Developers can create Discoverer "workbooks" that enable business users at all levels of the organization to gain immediate access to business information from relational data warehouses, data marts, or online transaction processing systems.
  • Oracle Reports -- Oracle Reports is a powerful enterprise reporting tool that allows developers to publish sophisticated, high-quality reports with unlimited data formatting throughout the enterprise and over the Internet. Support for XML reports allows maximum flexibility for delivering e-business intelligence to end users.

"From building e-business portals to building database applications and business intelligence, Oracle uniquely provides Internet developers the breadth of application development facilities in one suite," said Sohaib Abbasi, Oracle senior vice president of Development. "As business intelligence is critical to the success of an e-business, Internet business intelligence tools are essential along with tools for building Internet database applications and portals. Now, with Oracle Internet Developer Suite, developers have all they need for rapid, productive e-business application development."

In the past three months alone, over 275,000 copies of Oracle's tools have been downloaded from Oracle Technology Network, Oracle's premiere online developer community. Oracle Technology Network has grown from just 20,000 members in January 1999, to over 850,000 members today, growing at a rate of 2,000 new memberships per day.

Pricing and Availability

For members of the Oracle Technology Network, the Oracle Internet Developer Suite is immediately available for download free-of-charge via OTN (technet.oracle.com).

The Oracle Internet Developer Suite is also immediately available for purchase. The five application development tools are priced at $4995 per named user. Previous to this announcement, the total cost of these five tools sold separately totaled $14,000.

All of Oracle's tools are designed for building Internet applications that run on a variety of hardware platforms and operating systems, including Unix, Windows 2000, and Linux.
