MathSoft Inc Wins $750,000 Grant from the NIH

MathSoft Inc announced that its Data Analysis Division has been awarded a two-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the development of next-generation statistical data mining technology.

This research grant funds development of innovative tree-based algorithm technology, including model selection strategies and stability diagnostics. By linking tree-based models with sophisticated graphical tools developed within S-PLUS, the technology will allow researchers to better explore and mine their data to discover important trends. The technology will benefit researchers working with large data sets, such as gene expression microarrays. Further, developers anticipate that the tree-based modeling technology will accelerate data clustering and decision making for researchers beyond what they currently can accomplish.

"We were selected because our research group has an in-depth understanding of data mining, statistics, digital imaging, and applied math. Further, our world-class group has an established history of successful commercialization of research results," says Shawn Javid, senior vice president and general manager, MathSoft Inc. "S-PLUS offers the most powerful analytical tools in the industry today for exploratory data analysis and data mining. We anticipate that the technology developed from this grant will improve our ability to provide products and services to meet growing demands for data mining solutions."

MathSoft reports research income as a reduction of research and development expenses in its 10Q and 10K filings with the SEC.
