Downloads of Oracle8i for Linux Increasing

Oracle Corp, one of the largest providers of software for e-business, announced the widespread adoption of the Oracle Internet Platform for Linux by developers, customers and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). Oracle's database software for Linux is being downloaded from Oracle Technology Network (OTN) at four times the rate of Oracle on Microsoft Windows 2000 and NT. The increasing demand for Oracle software and the growing size of customers' sites further underscore Oracle's leadership on Linux.

According to industry analyst firm International Data Corp (IDC), from 1997 through 1999, paid shipments of Linux server software grew faster than those of any other server operating environment. Software download statistics from Oracle's own developer community echo that growth. In the past year, requests for Oracle's database software for Linux have increased twelve-fold. During July 1999, when Oracle first announced Oracle8i for Linux, 20,000 copies were downloaded that month. During July 2000, 285,000 copies of the latest release of Oracle8i for Linux were downloaded.

The preference of Oracle's Internet software for Linux for large-scale implementations is also reflected among Oracle's customers and ISVs. 1stUp.com, a CMGI company, is a market leader in providing online and offline brand names with private label Internet access solutions and innovative advertising technology. Since summer 1999, 1stUp.com has grown to support more than 4 million subscribers across it's 130 private label Internet access partners, and sought Oracle8i database technology because of its ability to scale and meet 1stUp.com's continuous growth.

"By choosing Oracle we knew we were working with the only software company that truly recognized the potential of Linux and was committed to developing leading-edge products based upon it," said Ric O'Connell, vice president, engineering 1stUp.com. "In working with Oracle over the last year, we have not been disappointed. Since implementing Oracle on Linux in July 1999, 1stUp.com has seen the number of transactions increase dramatically to over 50 million during July."

Other recent customer implementations of Oracle for Linux include:

  • Deja.com, quickly and easily helps consumers find the products they want and directs them to merchants who have that exact product in stock. Deja uses Oracle8i for Linux to support the always escalating data demands of their customers.
  • eHatchery LLC is a full-service Internet incubator for new technology and new ideas. The company has created a technical infrastructure called Hatchware to support certain business functions of incubating companies. Hatchware uses Oracle8i for Linux for its data-driven components.
  • HermanSport.com, one of the leading Sporting Goods retailers since 1921, and online since 1997 uses Oracle8i for Linux to support the always escalating transaction demands of their customers.
  • LeaseExchange is one of the leading open equipment leasing marketplaces. Named a Red Herring "Top 10 Company to Watch" in May 2000, LeaseExchange uses Oracle8i for Linux to provide the data for their site.
  • NetLedger, a leading application service provider (ASP) enables small businesses to outsource their e-business solutions via the Internet; NetLedger uses Oracle8i for Linux on more than 200 servers that hold all of their customers financial data.

In addition to customers, some of Oracle's most progressive ISVs have adopted Linux as the operating system for their applications. Eight such Oracle ISVs -- AMS Realtime, CIMS Lab Inc, Logistics and Internet Systems (LIS), Hyperwave AG, ION Information Technologies Ltd, Knox Software, Sane Solutions LLC, and Spider E-Commerce Corporation -- are leveraging the flexibility of Linux on the Oracle Internet Platform for developing and deploying high-performance, enterprise-class applications at the lowest possible cost.

Spider E-Commerce Corporation specializes in business-to-business and business-to-consumer e-commerce solutions and utilizes its software built on Oracle8i for Linux to provide solutions for some of the most recognized names in the sporting goods, electronics and fashion apparel industry.

"With the diversity of our customer base, we needed the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of the Linux operating system," said Paul White, CEO, Spider ECommerce Corporation. "With Oracle products available for Linux, our choice became much clearer. Over the past year, we have found that the reliability and scalability of Oracle for Linux had given us the ability to gain more customers more quickly."

"By offering the stability, functionality, openness and value that rivals any other operating system, Linux has become the most talked-about platform for e-businesses," said Jeremy Burton, Oracle senior vice president of Product Marketing and Services. "We recognized early on the tremendous potential of Linux and moved quickly to be one of the first companies to offer our products on the operating system. That quick action has provided us with a truly unmeasurable advantage."
