BI/DW MARKET GROWTH TOPS MORE THAN 60%

Research results recently published by Survey.com, a leading eResearch services company, revealed that the worldwide business intelligence and data warehousing (BI/DW) market grew at a blistering rate in 1999. With a year-over-year growth rate for revenue of 62%, the market, excluding in-house expenditures, topped the $28 billion mark in 1999.

"The growth rate for the BI/DW market in 1999 was just phenomenal," said Nancy Stewart, senior analyst with Survey.com. "We found robust growth in all the segments of the market: systems, storage, software, and services. IBM held steadfast to the top spot on the vendor list, at a fair distance from its competitors, despite not being able to match the growth rate of the overall market."

According to the study, IBM was number one in BI/DW market share, overall, and held the number one position in three of the four segments. Only EMC topped IBM in the storage segment. In the hotly contested software sector, IBM and Oracle ran neck and neck, both closing in on the billion-dollar mark in revenue for the year. "While the top eight vendors in the market all had estimated 1999 revenues of $700 million or more, none were able to grow at the rate of the overall market," Stewart said. "Of the leading vendors, only Oracle and Sun Microsystems had growth rates of over 40% for the year."

Reporting on the storage segment separately for the first time, the Survey.com study confirmed the significance of the storage component in BI/DW solutions. "With the rapidly growing volume of data contained in BI/DW solutions, and the expectation of exponential growth, we knew that it was important to highlight this segment of the market," Stewart said. "The study results confirmed our assumptions on just how hot the storage component is as a market." Revenues in the storage sector, which included both subsystems and storage management software, reached nearly $7.5 billion in 1999.
