UniTree Reduces Storage Cost of Large Data WarehousesUniTree Software - developer of nearline mass storage solutions to the high end Unix market - has announced the release of its UniTree Database Near Line (UDNL) product. UDNL gives data warehouse, data mining, and decision support system customers the ability to transparently store large amounts of data on near line storage - as opposed to adding costly disk storage. This ability drastically reduces the cost of storage and storage management in very large database and data warehouse environments. "With the explosive growth of data and data warehouses, UDNL allows customers to easily grow their data warehouses to hundreds of gigabytes, terabytes and even petabytes of data at a cost of pennies per megabyte", says Nigel Dear, UniTree's European Director of Sales and Marketing. "Nearline is a very cost effective way to tackle the growing data mountain." The basic principle of UDNL is that as data becomes inactive in a data warehouse, the inactive portion of the data is transparently moved from disk based storage to near line storage such as tape or optical. Data that has been moved to near line storage appears to be on-line and is quickly accessed by the warehouse on demand. UDNL is implemented at a level that makes the product compatible with virtually every type of database on the market today, including homegrown proprietary databases. In the initial release, UDNL has been tested and qualified with Oracle Corporation's 8i release and UniTree will qualify other databases as needed. The transparent manner in which UDNL is implemented, makes it easily deployable in a number of industries. Primary application areas include data warehousing and data storage/database archiving in a very wide range of sectors such as financial services/banks, scientific data, internet (e.g. B2B/B2C Internet Storage Services Providers), CRM, retail, imaging, medical, CAD/CAM, digital video, and oil and gas.
