LECCOTECH INTRODUCES LECCO DB EXPERT FOR ORACLE

LECCOTECH Inc introduced the LECCO DB Expert for Oracle product, which provides database administrators (DBAs) with new software tools for management and enhancement of Oracle database systems.

The new package gathers real-time statistics on the performance of structured query language (SQL) requests for database information and reports. It incorporates a new SQL Visual Inspector module that aids in graphical analysis of SQL impact and overall system performance. LECCO DB Expert is built on the company's unique, artificial intelligence-based LECCO SQL Expert product and is designed to provide DBAs with faster, more intuitive understanding of database structure, behavior and related SQL activities.

"This new product assists DBAs with both the collection of performance statistics and their analysis," explained Stephen Wong, LECCOTECH president and chief executive officer. "A huge set of statistics can be retrieved during system inspection or production monitoring, but analyzing them is always a difficult task. LECCO DB Expert allows the DBA to customize the set of statistics to be retrieved, in order to reduce the amount of data viewed at one time. The new SQL Visual Inspector module is then used to display the data to provide a manageable overview for more meaningful assessment of the entire database system's performance.

"DBAs can zoom in and out, rotate graphs and drill down to multiple detail levels to compare various SQL statements' run times and resources consumption, to identify the most resource-intensive SQL statements and tune them with our unique Syntactical SQL Optimizer," he added. "In addition, a new Stored Outlines Manager is provided for DBAs to use in stabilizing SQL to avoid performance changes resulting from database version upgrades, data migration to a new database or growth in database size over time."

In operation, the LECCO DB Expert's Snapshot Monitor module captures performance statistics while the database is running. The SQL Visual Inspector converts that data into an on-screen graph that provides insight and makes it easy to understand overall system performance. DBAs can pinpoint problematic SQL statements with point-and-click ease. The SQL Visual Inspector permits viewing of statistics in 2D or 3D at various angles and in selectable ranges, then using the zoom, rotation and move features to explore and analyze the data. LECCO DB Expert will also collect run-time data on individual SQL statements so that DBAs can pick the replacement SQL that is best suited for their applications.

The new Oracle Stored Outlines feature can stabilize SQL performance to avoid degradation during database version upgrades, during migrations from other databases to Oracle or for managing the rapid growth of database transaction volume.

"This function is very useful for managing good performance with critical SQL statements that may be 'fired' hundreds or thousands of times per day, so that system performance will not be affected while the database environment changes over time," Wong noted. "DBAs can now use the Stored Outline Manager to maintain their stored outlines using a handy graphical user interface, without having to go through a complicated series of command inputs."

A new SQL Information Help feature provides online assistance for keywords within the execution plan, run time statistics and stored outline procedures. DBAs don't have to go looking for help but can easily pull up a keyword description window whenever it's needed. The LECCO DB Expert also provides a Privilege Log-In feature specifically for terminating Run Time, Run Result and Batch Run functions. This is particularly useful for users that don't have authorization to terminate a running process.

They can simply terminate the running SQL statement while retrieving the time or result of a test run. An online LECCO Assistant wizard guides users through the use of the new product so that new users can be productive within minutes of starting to use the new product. As users become more familiar with the system, the Assistant wizard can be turned off to allow more flexibility.

"Some complex SQL statements will generate a large volume of syntactically equivalent SQL statement alternatives during optimization procedures -- and to save the time required to test all generated alternatives, a new filter function is provided so users can specify which alternatives they want batch tested," Wong added. "This feature also provides more cost-based information on resource consumption to aid in alternative selection."

The new LECCO DB Expert product is now shipping. It is priced at $5,000.00.
