SAS Introduces Linux Cross-Hosted Compiler for S/390

SAS Institute, a market leader in e-intelligence and data warehousing, announced the planned availability of Version 7.0 of the SAS/C and the SAS/C++ Cross-platform Development System for Linux, targeted at OS/390 and VM/ESA.

Introduced at the SHARE Technical Conference in Long Beach, CA last week, SAS will begin shipping its industry standard C/C++ Compiler for Linux this month.

The availability of Version 7.00C for Linux reflects the flexibility and choices that software vendors demand in today's environment of open and portable development systems. "We are very excited about providing our customers with increased flexibility and solutions for their software development needs," says Gary T. Ciampa, SAS product manager for the C/C++ Compiler product. "The Linux cross-compiler allows developers to build applications targeted for S/390 without having to face the steep learning curve and subtleties associated with that environment. They can take advantage of development and source management methodologies that are already established under Linux."

SAS has long recognized the importance of cross-platform software development and introduced the first S/390 cross-compiler hosted on HP-UX in 1994. Since then, the family of cross-compilers has been expanded to include Sun/Solaris, AIX, and the Windows operating systems.
