ORACLE EARNS THREE TOP 10 RANKINGS FOR OLTP ON UNIX

Grand Prize-winning solutions for Korea Telecom and Samsung have earned Oracle Corp, one of the largest providers of software for e-business, the top-ranking positions for On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) on UNIX platforms in Winter Corporation's 5th annual Database Scalability Program. In addition to these three Grand Prize awards, Oracle customer solutions swept the rankings for OLTP on UNIX in the categories of largest database size, most rows/records and peak online activity. Oracle8i's proven track record in performance and scalability has been proven once again in the forum of real-world customer implementations.

Winter Corp's Database Scalability Program 2000 is designed to examine the technical and business characteristics large-scale database implementations. Korea Telecom's Oracle database solution ranked highest among all database solutions for OLTP on UNIX in terms of both overall database size -- 2,258 GB of data -- and most rows/records -- 5,866 million rows/records. When measuring database size for research, Winter Corp excludes redundant copies of data and free space. The resulting figures may appear to be smaller than those reported elsewhere but are more useful for analysis and comparison, according to Winter Corp.

Topping the list of databases for peak online activity on UNIX, Samsung SDS's Oracle database was recognized for reaching 2,500 transactions per second.

Performing well with large quantities of data and growing numbers of users is becoming increasingly important to run business applications efficiently. Databases are squarely positioned at the heart of e-business-critical solutions such as business intelligence, customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain management. Every link in the e-business chain -- from partners to customers -- has a stake in the database. Oracle8i, with its proven performance, scalability and reliability, is a crucial element to keeping data for these applications available for use.

"Database technology has always been a key component in OLTP applications, which are characterized by their demanding technology requirements for concurrent users, high-availability and large stored-data volumes," said Chuck Rozwat, executive vice president of Server Technologies at Oracle Corp. "As the popularity of CRM, ERP and business intelligence applications has increased, e-businesses more than ever need an Oracle database. As shown by Korea Telecom and Samsung, Oracle8i is a proven UNIX-based OLTP platform leader -- leadership that will be extended with the availability of Oracle9i later this year."
