WhiteCross Moves Data Reporting and Analysis to Linux

WhiteCross Systems, a leading service provider of reporting and analytical solutions, announced its move to Linux as its Operating System (OS), replacing LynxOS. Now WhiteCross is able to see the OS source code and potentially modify it to enhance performance when and where required.

There are a vast number of people carrying out development applications for Linux, so WhiteCross benefits in receiving excellent support, minimal cost and quality development openly available. The Linux platform also supports more RAM per rack so that WhiteCross can provide more capacity for new and existing customer's data analysis.

The decision to port the operating system to Linux further demonstrates WhiteCross' commitment to building world-class infrastructures for analytics. WhiteCross is using Linux for its Data Exploration Server, a proprietary, two-tiered system that is massively parallel and can scale to meet any client requirements. Unlike optimization, indexes or other performance-enhancing techniques that some database administrators use, the WX/DES is able to run data analyses continuously, even during concurrent loading operation, and thereby eliminate for customers the lengthy analysis cycle that is traditionally associated with receiving business-critical updated reports.

Doc Searls, senior editor at Linux Journal said: "Linux is an ideal operating system platform for data reporting and analysis. It increases functionality and efficiency, lowers development time and costs, and vastly lowers the threshold of implementation."

"There are many benefits to running our Data Exploration Server on a Linux platform," said Roger Gaskell, Director of System Development & Production for WhiteCross Systems. "They are mainly of an internal nature, but indirectly enable us to provide our customers with greater capacity and more efficient maintenance of the server to maintain the data analysis services we provide to customers 24 hours a day."

Additionally, running the WhiteCross DES on Linux enables the company to enhance its technical support efforts. Changes to code can be handled in-house for increased development efficiencies resulting in a faster time to market advantage.
