Growth in Web Mining Drives Clementine Revenue 250 Percent

Fueled by its rapidly expanding use as a Web mining tool, sales of the Clementine data mining workbench in the first quarter of 2001 were 250 percent of the same period last year, according to SPSS BI, a division of SPSS Inc. The increase in last quarter's revenue is a continuation of Clementine's recent growth: annual revenue doubled in both 1999 and 2000. The latest version of the software, Clementine 6.0, was released in December 2000 and includes features which help organizations get a jump-start on Web mining projects.

"The first quarter numbers show that the market's adoption of Clementine as the premier data mining workbench continues to grow," said Peter Caron, SPSS BI senior marketing manager. "Since acquiring Clementine in 1998, we've seen sales double every year. This sustained growth is particularly impressive when compared with IDC's estimate of a 32 percent increase in the data mining market through 2004.

"In the past two years we've worked hard to expand the functionality and improve the performance of the Clementine product family," continued Caron. "Most recently, we introduced the Web mining Clementine application template (CAT), which organizations worldwide use to improve online performance, implement customer relationship management (CRM) initiatives and increase the value of Web sites to their customers."

CATs are pre-built collections of commonly used operations, techniques and documentation tailored to specific applications which help ensure successful and productive data mining projects. CATs follow the industry-standard CRISP-DM data mining methodology and incorporate proven best practices and real-world data mining experience. Clementine 6.0 is the first version to include a Web mining CAT and also includes a mapping tool which helps users apply the CAT to their own data.

In the first quarter of 2001, SPSS BI made significant sales of Clementine to Web-based companies, particularly in the financial sector. For example, both Xelion, the online trading division of Gruppo UniCredito Italiano, and cahoot, Abbey National's standalone interactive bank, purchased Clementine to enhance their customer relationship management efforts.
