Gensym Announces Immediate Availability of G2 Classic, 5.2

Gensym Corporation, a leader in adaptive software products for modeling, simulating and managing e-business infrastructure, announced the immediate availability of G2 Classic, version 5.2, a software platform for developing and deploying real-time expert system applications. This release builds on the software's powerful capabilities for real-time reasoning, development productivity and stable deployment.

G2 Classic addresses the growing need among organizations in the manufacturing, telecommunications, aerospace and government industries to effectively interpret and respond to time-critical data. G2 is a leading choice for expert-system applications that monitor, diagnose, control and optimize complex operational processes. G2 enables organizations to capture the knowledge of their best operations experts, and to intelligently combine that knowledge with real-time data, archival information and business policies. G2's powerful reasoning engines analyze all of these inputs in real time to develop the best possible operating decisions, either as operator recommendations or as automated actions. With G2-based solutions, organizations achieve higher levels of operating efficiencies, asset and service availability, and production quality.

Gensym markets G2 Classic to a variety of distribution partners with domain expertise in a wide range of expert systems-driven industries.

"G2 is a valuable part of our suite of software technology for servicing the manufacturing industries," said Piet Polfliet, project engineer IT plant solutions, with Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) in Belgium. "Our group is a global supplier of customized industry-oriented, technical service and IT solutions covering the whole plant life cycle. One of our key solution areas is helping manufacturers achieve important improvements with their production tracking and control. For example, using G2 for modeling, simulation, and monitoring, Siemens I&S helped an Infineon Technologies' semiconductor plant achieve a 30 percent reduction in idling times and approximately a 25 percent increase in transport capacity. This led to a significant rise in production in the manufacturing section of the company.

"We have been beta testing G2 Classic 5.2 on both Windows NT and Linux and are pleased with what we have seen. We look forward to working with the final release," said Polfliet.

Another distribution partner that plans to deploy G2 Classic, version 5.2 is Ericsson Microwave Systems.

"Based on G2, our Fault Management eXpert (FMX) tool helps operators of wireless networks achieve higher levels of service availability through its ability to automate tedious tasks, filter alarms, and diagnose the root causes of problems," said Anders Hulthen, chief designer with Ericsson Microwave Systems, telecom management group. "We have been working with the G2 Classic 5.2 beta on Windows NT and Sun Solaris. We anticipate that this latest release of G2 will further add to our abilities to develop and deploy the expert functionality within FMX."

The ProTelligence Factor

G2 Classic stands out among expert-system software platforms because of ProTelligence, Gensym's unique, powerful reasoning-engine technology. ProTelligence, which drives G2's real-time reasoning, development productivity and stable-deployment capabilities, is the culmination of Gensym's years of experience developing powerful, award-winning technology. The proven industrial strength of ProTelligence is being used successfully by hundreds of companies in industries worldwide to manage their complex business processes.

"With G2 Classic 5.2, we have extended its capabilities for reasoning, rapid development, and deployment," said David Siegel, Gensym's director of product management for Gensym's expert manufacturing products. "These capabilities are what our users tell us distinguishes G2 as a powerful software environment for real-time decision support applications. We have also worked very hard to continue our tradition of providing a very stable deployment platform - for example we can point to widely deployed G2 applications that have delivered millions of hours of closed-loop control for mission-critical operations. G2's capabilities together with its stability are particularly important to our partners that base their products and services upon G2."

G2 Classic 5.2 delivers the following enhancements:

  • Real-time reasoning engine: G2 Classic 5.2 contains features that further automate reasoning logic, such as inspecting the current state of knowledge in an application, searching a knowledge base for information and exporting results, and administering user access.
  • Rapid development of real-time expert system applications: G2 development is even more productive with new debugging tools, enhanced natural language editing prompts, additional access to object properties, easier tracking of objects, automated tools for deployment packaging, and much more.
  • Deployment: G2 Classic 5.2 adds a new deployment option with support for the Linux operating system (Linux availability is scheduled for the second half of 2001) in addition to its support of Microsoft Windows and UNIX. This release also enhances G2's integration capabilities, with support for larger data flows and detection of more types of data-flow errors.
