On The Market:

Taratec Continues to Help Pharmaceutical Companies

Taratec Development Corporation, a leader in providing integrated e-technology and regulatory solutions for the life sciences industry, has announced the addition of a Knowledge and Information Management offering that will focus on improving the "knowledge-intensive" phases of the product life cycle, throughout drug discovery, pre-clinical and clinical testing, development, manufacturing, distribution, and sales and marketing. Combining innovative strategies with state-of-the-art technologies, this Taratec offering will provide customized solutions that help pharmaceutical companies manage the critical knowledge and information assets needed to gain a competitive advantage.

A primary focus of the offering will be on the drug discovery phase, which presents the industry's greatest opportunity for process improvement by managing the vast amounts of data generated by current genomic, proteomic, and bioinformatic practices. Using data mining methods, centralized data warehouses and intranet portal technologies, this offering will help identify promising compounds earlier in the drug discovery process.

"The increasing pressure on global pharmaceutical companies to develop and maintain a strong pipeline of blockbuster drugs has resulted in an increased number of compounds that need to be evaluated in the drug discovery arena," said Bill Gargano, Taratec's president and COO. "Taratec can now help expedite this evaluation process so that our clients can focus more of their resources on moving promising new chemical entity (NCE) candidates through the rest of the development process."

Taratec's Knowledge and Information Management offering will also expand the Company's capabilities in supply chain management. Building on Taratec's robust plant operation and manufacturing system experience, the new offering will focus on helping life sciences companies decrease the costs associated with the manufacturing and distribution process. This includes deploying technology solutions designed to reduce raw material inventories, streamline the procurement process, and facilitate more efficient distribution of finished products to customers.

Elby Nash, Taratec's executive vice president, will be responsible for the development of the Knowledge and Information Management offering. Prior to joining Taratec, Nash held senior management positions with the highly regarded consulting firms Whittman-Hart and Cambridge Technology Partners. His background includes 30 years of experience in developing IT strategies that helped chemical and pharmaceutical companies increase organizational effectiveness, shrink product development times, and launch new services. Nash is also an adjunct professor at Stevens Institute of Technology where he teaches graduate courses in strategy and information management.

"By leveraging both existing and newly acquired knowledge our clients can realize a significant competitive advantage," said Nash. "Taratec's deep understanding and proven experience in creating effective knowledge management programs gives our clients an edge in accelerating their discovery-to-market processes."

ANGOSS Announces Planned Availability of KnowledgeSERVER

ANGOSS Software announced planned availability of the KnowledgeSERVER data mining provider for SQL Server 2000.

These enhancements extend the analytics capabilities of the SQL Server database platform, providing developers with a comprehensive portfolio of additional data mining algorithms seamlessly integrated with SQL Server 2000 for use in enterprise software applications. The offering is implemented under the OLE DB for Data Mining (OLE DB-DM) and XML for Analysis standards developed by Microsoft in collaboration with more then 40 software vendors developing business intelligence and enterprise analytics solutions.

"SQL Server was the first enterprise database platform to incorporate a standards based approach to data mining and Microsoft's innovation in this area continues to lead the database industry," commented ANGOSS president Eric Apps. "By using these standards, ANGOSS has achieved significant time to market advantages and cost savings. We can now make available to corporate and commercial developers a powerful and affordable data mining platform tightly integrated with SQL Server 2000 they can use to add advanced analytics capabilities to their customer relationship management, value chain management and other analytical applications."

"By working with Data Warehouse Alliance partners such as ANGOSS who are continuously working to design and deliver innovative, standards based solutions on the Microsoft SQL Server platform we are continuing to deliver industry leading performance, functionality and total cost of ownership while reducing implementation time, cost and risk," commented John Eng, SQL Server Group, Microsoft Corporation.

Demonstrated recently by Microsoft and ANGOSS personnel at the Tech*Ed Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, the KnowledgeSERVER data mining provider is planned for beta release in August, 2001. The demonstration is available online. Developers interested in participating in the beta program should send their requests to support@angoss.com . This beta release complements the previously announced release of the ANGOSS Data Mining SDK for SQL Server 2000, developed by ANGOSS for distribution by Microsoft. The ANGOSS Data Mining SDK for SQL Server 2000 is currently available and can be downloaded from the Microsoft Website or from ANGOSS.
