SISTINA RELEASES LINUX LVM PRODUCTION v.1.0

Sistina, a developer of software that simplifies complex data storage and dramatically reduces storage costs, announced the release of production version 1.0 of the Linux Logical Volume Manager (LVM) under the GNU General Public License. LVM is a subsystem for on-line disk storage management that has become a de-facto standard for storage management across Linux implementations.

LVM supports enterprise level volume management of disk and disk subsystems by grouping arbitrary disks into volume groups. The total capacity of volume groups can be allocated to logical volumes, which are accessed as regular block devices.

"LVM provides logical separation of storage, the ability to move data from one physical device to another while on-line, and dynamic block device resizing," commented Heinz Mauelshagen, Sistina developer and lead architect of LVM. "Enterprise computing demands this functionality, and LVM is able to deliver this."

Furthermore, the functionality of LVM allows system administrators to upgrade systems, remove failing disks, reorganize workloads, and adapt to changing system needs through a minimum amount of time and effort.

"LVM is a major building block for the Linux OS because it allows Linux to be used in an enterprise server environment," said Matthew O'Keefe, CTO and Founder of Sistina. "In addition to addressing the needs of the enterprise computing sector, LVM provides ease-of-use for desktop users as well, by simplifying on-disk management of Linux file systems and volumes."

LVM has received numerous praises from the technical and enterprise level communities. Texas Communications, a provider of custom two-way communications, located in Abilene, Texas has been using LVM in a production environment at the company for the past six months.

"We have used LVM for months on our production machines without a single incident," remarked Lewis Bergman, Texas Communication's IT Manager. "LVM allows us to manage our systems without complicated guesswork as to the file structure of an uninstalled system. This software has been great."

Since September 2000, there have been nearly 17,000 downloads of LVM (pre-production releases) from the Sistina Website. LVM 1.0 is now available for download at www.sistina.com/lvm/Pages/download.html.

About Sistina Software

Sistina Software, a developer of software that simplifies complex data storage and dramatically reduces storage costs, melds NAS and SAN within one operating system using a cluster file system that allows multiple servers on a SAN to map a single file system onto the shared SAN devices, and a cluster volume manager to provide host-based virtualization. Sistina was founded in May 2000, and is headquartered in Minneapolis, MN. For more information, visit www.sistina.com.
