LinuxWorld CONFERENCE & EXPO REWARDS OPEN SOURCE DEDICATION

IDG World Expo has announced the winners of awards recognizing achievements by the open source community at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The awards included the $25,000 IDG/Linus Torvalds Community Award, the Open Source Product Excellence Awards, and the OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award.

Following a keynote presentation by Stanford Law School Professor Lawrence Lessig, Linux creator Linus Torvalds and Rob Scheschareg, vice president of sales, marketing and product development of IDG World Expo, presented the $25,000 IDG/Linus Torvalds Community Award to the Free Standards Group for demonstrating an exceptional commitment to open source. The Free Standards Group was rewarded for its work to accelerate the use and acceptance of open source technologies through the application, development and promotion of standards.

"The Free Standards Group is very grateful to Linus Torvalds for creating the Linux kernel; Richard Stallman for laying the foundation of free software; and IDG World Expo for creating LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, a great forum for technology geeks and business people to meet, exchange ideas and move Linux forward," said Scott McNeil, Executive Director of the Free Standards Group.

IDG World Expo also presented the Open Source Excellence Awards in conjunction with the UniForum Association. The following awards were presented in recognition of outstanding open source products and services offered by LinuxWorld Conference & Expo exhibitors:

"In celebration of the tenth birthday of Linux, the community continues to reward specific innovations and certain companies whose tireless dedication have helped the platform 'come of age'," said IDG World Expo's Scheschareg. "Having played a significant role in the growth of the Linux movement, LinuxWorld Conference & Expo is the ideal forum for the recognition of these achievements."

Rounding out the award presentations at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo was the OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award, presented for the first time at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo. OSDL presented its $25,000 cash prize to Heinz Mauelshagen in recognition of his work on the Linux Logical Volume Manager (LVM). Mauelshagen is a senior engineer and team lead at Sistina Software, where he is responsible for the development of LVM, a software solution helps large enterprises manage data storage. The next OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award to honor contributions to open source programming for the enterprise data center will be presented at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo/New York 2002.

"The OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award recognizes developers for exceptional contributions to Linux for the enterprise," said Tim Withan, OSDL's lab director. "Heinz's contribution to the data center, through LVM, is extremely significant. We hope this award will encourage Heinz and other Linux developers to continue enhancing open source programs for enterprise and telecomm usage."

Recognized as the world's largest gathering of the open source community, the next LinuxWorld Conference & Expo is scheduled for January 29 - February 1, 2002 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
