People & Positions:

Steve Byrnes to Lead e.Intelligence Marketing Push

e.Intelligence Inc, a leading provider of predictive intelligence software for demand chain management, announced that Steve Byrnes has joined the firm as vice president of marketing. Byrnes will be responsible for worldwide marketing of all e.Intelligence products, including the e.Intelligence Suite, which converts a static data warehouse into an information hub to help companies better understand, anticipate and stimulate market demand, and thereby more predictably meet company goals.

"We are very pleased to have Steve on board to lead our marketing efforts," said Richard Tanler, president and CEO of e.Intelligence. "His combined marketing, sales and management expertise will be invaluable as we begin a more aggressive effort in support of the launch of our products."

Byrnes brings to e.Intelligence nearly 10 years of successful sales and marketing experience in data warehousing and business intelligence. Most recently, he led marketing efforts at nQuire Software, an emerging analytics provider. Before nQuire, Byrnes was vice president of marketing for Sterling Software's International Business Intelligence Division and was based in London. He joined Sterling Software as part of their 1999 acquisition of Information Advantage Inc, a leading provider of enterprise information intelligence products founded by Tanler. Byrnes holds a masters degree from Michigan State University and a B.A from Drake University.

"Every day, you read articles and hear reports about companies missing earnings estimates and having to write-off millions of dollars in inventory -- all due to an inability to accurately see and anticipate changes in demand," said Byrnes. "Every one of these examples validates the critical importance of enabling organizations to better understand what drives and influences demand through pricing and promotion. e.Intelligence is leading the way by delivering predictive intelligence, which overcomes these historically complex and difficult challenges."

About e.Intelligence Inc

e.Intelligence provides predictive intelligence software that improves organizations' visibility into their demand chain and increases demand forecast accuracy. With e.Intelligence, companies see and understand all drivers of demand -- product by product, customer by customer -- so they can better manage product planning, replenishment, merchandising, pricing, promotion and other activities that influence demand. e.Intelligence makes an organization's data warehouse the foundation for collaboration, allowing companies and their demand chain partners to establish time-critical performance targets, gain insight through "what-if" analyses and reach consensus on the required action, or "what-next." Privately held e.Intelligence is based in Minneapolis, MN. For more information, visit www.ei-inc.com.

KXEN Appoints Prof. Gilbert Saporta to Sci. Committee

KXEN, a global analytic software company that provides powerful, predictive and descriptive data modeling technology for both data mining professionals and business decision-makers, announced the designation of Prof. Gilbert Saporta to its Scientific Committee. Chaired by Michel Bera, KXEN's co-founder and chief scientific officer, the Scientific Committee is comprised of a wide range of renowned industry experts.

Prof. Saporta is an international expert in applied statistics and multivariate data analysis and is a widely published author in these topics. In addition to being the chair of applied statistics at CNAM, Prof. Saporta is also the president of the French Statistical Society and is an active participant of the International Statistical Institute.

"We are thrilled to have Gilbert join our Scientific Committee team of industry experts," said Roger Haddad, co-founder and CEO of KXEN. "Gilbert's specialties in applied statistics and multivariate data analysis will round out our team of expert advisors. He is a leader in the field and is a real asset to KXEN as we approach our next phase of growth."

The KXEN Scientific Committee now consists of nine members. The additional eight industry experts include:

  • Dr. Leon Bottou has 15 years experience with a wide variety of statistical learning algorithms. He worked for Bell Labs for one year contributing to Vapnik's statistical learning theory. At AT&T Labs- Research, Dr. Bottou invented the "graph transformer network" method now used by NCR check reading machines processing about 10 percent of all U.S. checks. While with DjVu, he designed a document image compression system enabling the online distribution of high-resolution color document images;
  • Mr. Olivier Chapelle is working with Vladimir Vapnik on Support Vector Machines and regularization theory;
  • Dr. Francoise Fogelman Soulie is a specialist in neural networks at the University of Paris, where she created one of the first research teams in neural networks in France. Dr. Fogelman is an active member of IEEE, France Telecom Scientific Council, Board of Governors of International Neural Network Society, and is president of the European Neural Network Society;
  • Prof. Lee Giles is a professor of information sciences and technology, professor of computer science engineering, and associate director of research at Penn State University. Prof. Giles is an active participant of IEEE and a member of AAAI, CACM, and AAAS;
  • Dr. Yann LeCun was responsible for the development of an adaptive pattern recognition technique called "convolutional neural networks," which improved the accuracy, and simplified the design of pattern classification systems such as handwriting recognizers. Dr. LeCun is the head of the image processing research department at AT&T Labs- Research;
  • Mr. Philippe LeLong is currently vice president of development for COM1. Prior to COM1, Mr. LeLong was the chief technology officer for KeeBoo Corporation where he led the development team for the release of KeeBoo 1.0;
  • Dr. Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro is the president and editor of KDnuggets.com, a leading newsletter and Web site for data mining and knowledge discovery, as well as an independent consultant providing data mining consulting services. He is an internationally recognized expert in data mining, data warehousing, and knowledge discovery. Dr. Piatetsky-Shapiro is also the founding director of the ACM SIGKDD; and,
  • Dr. Emmanuel Viennet is currently the Maitre de Conferences of the University in Paris 13. Dr. Viennet's research activities are in the field of Statistical Pattern Recognition, where he applies tools like artificial neural networks and Support Vector Machines to data mining or image processing tasks.
