Computers & Processors:

CoSORT Software Ships for Intel Itanium Servers with Linux

Innovative Routines International (IRI) Inc (The CoSORT Company) announced its symmetric multi-processing (SMP) CoSORT sort and extract, transform, load (ETL) acceleration software for Intel Itanium processor-based server platforms running Debian. Future Itanium-based CoSORT releases are also planned for other operating systems.

With CoSORT available for Itanium-based servers running Linux64, IRI customers should see significant pre-load sort and ETL performance gains in very large database (VLDB) and warehouse (and e-commerce "data Webhouse") environments. According to Aberdeen Group*, "applications types such as large databases, business intelligence, on-line transaction processing, e-Commerce solution stacks, security, and technical scientific stand to benefit from Itanium architecture features such as large memory support, floating-point performance, large register set, and explicitly parallel design."

Targeted at the most demanding enterprise and high-performance computing applications, the Itanium processor is the first in a family of 64-bit products from Intel. The Itanium processor's Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) design enables breakthrough capabilities in processing terabytes of data, speeding protected online purchases and transactions, and processing complex computations.

"CoSORT users are ready to exploit the speed and responsiveness aspects of the Itanium architecture," observed IRI Business Development vice president David Friedland. "Direct CoSORT support for very large memory and its inherent parallelism enables users to process massive data collections much faster."

"Intel's Itanium processor provides the performance and scalability required for large database environments," said Lisa Hambrick, director of Enterprise Processor Marketing at Intel. "CoSORT's software complements the Itanium processor's features by enabling rapid sorting and enhancing ETL performance for large databases."

About CoSORT

CoSORT is the world's first, fastest, and most widely licensed commercial sort package on high-end UNIX and Windows NT platforms. CoSORT features several end-user and programmer interfaces to a parallel processing sort algorithm in a coroutine architecture. Included in its hardware-based, perpetual use prices are: data warehouse ETL, join and report generation functionality; third party sort replacement and conversion tools; support for more than 100 data and record types; automatic and manual SMP resource tuning; on-line documentation; and, on-site technical support in more than 30 countries.
