Analysis & Commentary:

NCR CEO: "DATA MARTS DON'T DELIVER"

Companies need a single view of their data, one version of the truth. This is the theme of NCR Corporation Chairman and CEO Lars Nyberg's keynote speech delivered at the company's Teradata user conference. In his address, Nyberg dismisses the ongoing technology debate about whether independent data marts or enterprise-wide systems are the best way to organize company data.

Independent data marts are commonly used to bring some analytical capabilities to a specific area of the business, like customer service. The problem with this approach is that the information is not readily available to other parts of the company like marketing and sales, where the information, in combination with other departments' data, could paint a more complete picture of the customer.

The solution, according to Nyberg, is to create a single data repository, an enterprise data warehouse that will produce long-term return on investment. Many companies do not realize the high costs of maintaining separate data marts. This is especially true when one adds up the costs that each department may incur for redundant hardware, software, maintenance and staffing.

Nyberg shared with conference attendees how creating an integrated decision architecture can give companies a competitive edge in responding quickly to and even anticipating customer needs.
