Business & Money Trail:

ETNUS TOTALVIEW TO SUPPORT SUN'S 64-BIT ARCHITECTURE

Etnus, a leading supplier of debuggers for complex code, announced that they have entered into an agreement where Sun Microsystems Inc will support Etnus TotalView advanced debugging capabilities on Sun platforms, specifically with Sun's full 64-bit architecture, as well as with Sun's Message Passing Interface (MPI), Sun's thread-safe and multiprotocol implementation of the MPI standard for parallel applications.

Both companies will contribute engineering resources to ensure that both Sun and Etnus customers have access to TotalView's broad range of debugging features for complex code in support of advanced application development on Sun's 64-bit systems.

"Etnus' debugging solution combined with Sun's powerful 64-bit architecture will provide customers with excellent debugging support that's available today," said George Iwaki, Senior Product Manager, Client and Technical Market Products Group, Sun Microsystems Inc. "Architected together with the 64-bit Solaris 8 Operating Environment and voted no. 1 operating system by Network Computing magazine, UltraSPARC III and the Solaris Operating Environment offer rock solid, scalable, binary compatible solutions for customers with over 12,000 applications."

"In order to fully exploit the capabilities of TotalView on Sun platforms, the Etnus engineering team will directly cooperate with engineers at Sun Microsystems," remarks Rich Collier, vice president of Engineering at Etnus. "The cooperative effort will guarantee that our joint customers will have the best debugging support available."

Etnus TotalView has roots in the high performance and technical computing community and is now being widely adopted by many commercial accounts, including Cisco and Unigraphics Solutions. "Unigraphics is offered on multiple platforms so we want to use the same debugger across all them," explains David James of UGS. "This means we do not take a productivity hit by learning multiple debuggers for testing on all our platforms. We need TotalView, and are excited that we'll be able to use it on our Sun 64-bit platform."

Etnus TotalView's next product release, coming in the spring of 2002, will contain many of the enhancements jointly engineered by Sun and Etnus. TotalView 5.1 will support Sun's complete 64-bit architecture, featuring UltraSPARC III based systems that highlight Sun's proven 3rd generation 64-bit CPU family. Further, TotalView will support Sun's Forte 6 Update 2 development environment.

In a future release, Sun MPI, which is part of the Sun HPC ClusterTools software, Sun's complete parallel development environment, will support Etnus TotalView. With the combination of scalable open architecture of Sun MPI and TotalView debugging support, Sun and Etnus customers will be able to develop highly complex parallel applications on Sun's 64-bit scalable computer systems.
