StorageTek Expert Unravels Storage Virtualization

Chuck Milligan, StorageTek (Storage Technology Corp) manager, Advance Technology, unraveled the intricacies of storage virtualization technology as part of the first workshop on Scalable Global Parallel File Systems in Stuttgart, Germany, on April 8 and 9. StorageTek is an expert in high-performance, efficient digitized data storage.

The High Performance Learning Center at the university organized the seminar, inviting vendors from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, The Netherlands and the U.S. to present the latest levels of technology available in their fields, and to discuss what technology breakthroughs might come next. The vendors represent cutting-edge technology related to storage virtualization, and network connection and management.

During the two-day seminar, Milligan discussed how information technology operations can attain infinite capacity tape volumes and full Fibre Channel bandwidth performance out of today's tape systems. He described the use of the StorageTek StorageNet 6000 (SN6000) storage domain manager with its RAIT capabilities. In addition, he projected that large operations writing to tape will be able to complete 99.99 percent of the time instead of 50 to 70 percent of the time, as is the current standard.

Attending the seminar were representatives of the high-end computing community of Europe.
