XIOtech/VERITAS' NAS Enterprise Solution Guide

XIOtech Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Seagate Technology and a storage area network (SAN) pioneer, announced the availability of a NAS Enterprise Solution Guide that describes how the XIOtech MAGNITUDE and VERITAS ServPoint software can be used to deploy scalable, flexible storage for NAS file serving. This allows customers to attach storage to their existing network while employing a storage foundation that can grow for the future.

"We don't see any reason why NAS users shouldn't receive all the back-end benefits of SAN, and we've always been big fans of XIOtech in that regard. This solution offers customers the best of both worlds," said Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst, Enterprise Storage Group.

The XIOtech MAGNITUDE can be easily connected to an Ethernet network to serve as a NAS device, using VERITAS ServPoint NAS for Solaris 8. XIOtech's new solution offers greater flexibility and scalability than traditional NAS approaches and provides file and block storage on one device. It also allows customers to extend the capabilities of their storage infrastructure without replacing existing hardware.

"Companies want to maximize the effectiveness of their IT resources while minimizing costs," said Dan McCormick, vice president of Worldwide Marketing for XIOtech. "This is a networked storage strategy that is easy to use, scales to meet changing business needs, and provides the performance enterprise applications demand -- while giving businesses a excellent return on investment through resource consolidation and reduced administrative burden."

"Today, many companies think they need to choose between NAS and SAN, but this solution allows the seamless integration of both architectures," said Kevin Reinis, vice president of business development and strategic alliances, VERITAS Software. "The combination of XIOtech's virtualized storage architecture and VERITAS ServPoint NAS software allows customers to easily deploy and manage their storage environment, regardless of the underlying hardware architecture."

VERITAS ServPoint Appliance Software for NAS for Solaris runs on an industry-standard server, transforming it into a NAS Gateway between the local area network and the XIOtech MAGNITUDE. Through this gateway, Windows and UNIX clients can store, access, and share files from anywhere on the network using NFS and CIFS protocols. This solution attaches directly to a LAN and delivers optimized file services with enterprise-class data protection and high-availability. It allows businesses the flexibility to scale NAS performance and storage capacity independently to address changing application requirements.
