People & Positions:

Kahn to Lead Seurat's Managed Analytics Service

Privately-held Seurat Company, a leader in marketing resource management, announced that it has hired Dr. William Kahn to run its Managed Analytics service. Part of Seurat Suite, a set of comprehensive, Internet-based marketing services, Managed Analytics helps companies quickly and effectively turn real-time customer data into strategic insights, which then drive marketing and customer relationship actions that have a direct impact on profits.

Under Dr. Kahn's leadership, the Managed Analytics service within Seurat Suite will give clients access to advanced customer data management and analytic tools, experts, and techniques, without having to build an extensive infrastructure and internal staff of their own. These activities range from data warehousing and data mining to price elasticity models, rules engines, predictive models and behavioral analyses. A sophisticated team of experts that includes economists, statisticians, behavioral scientists and market researchers will develop quantitative, fact-based insights in real-time, using integrated customer data and other research results. They will also translate these into strategies and tactical marketing actions to increase customer acquisition and retention, tied to the goals of the client company. Seurat's approach to managed analytics is to manage as much or as little customer data as clients want and will feature a unique eight-step methodology for generating insights. Moreover, Seurat stands behind this proven process by guaranteeing improvements in business results.

In talking about his new position, Kahn commented on the untapped marketing opportunities for organizations with large amounts of customer data. "Most of the world's data is just sitting there, dormant. What's lacking is the ability to analyze customer data and turn it into true insight that allows a company to maximize revenue and margins."

Kahn went on to add that the infrastructure and skill sets required for realtime analytics are very difficult to pull together, manage, and keep current. "Companies will have to outsource these activities to have ongoing access to state-of-the-art techniques and experts."

Dr. Kahn brings to Seurat a twenty-year track record for helping companies use marketing analytics to boost revenues and profits. Dr. Kahn was formerly a partner with Mitchell Madison Group (MMG), a financial services management consultancy, where he developed their analytic services capabilities. This team provided the analytic base that drove 10% of MMG revenues. Among numerous projects he led there, of note is the world's first individual residential mortgage prepayment model for Chase Mortgage, called by Goldman Sachs analysts "the best use of customer information in the industry."

Prior to MMG, Kahn was a leader of research methodologies at W. L. Gore and Associates for seven years. At Gore he led designs and redesigns of major technologies including Gore-Tex fabric, the main-bus cable for the Boeing 777, and whole-body filters used at major semiconductor manufacturing plants.

Most recently, Dr. Kahn was founder of William Kahn Consulting. Among the impressive accomplishments of his firm was helping to more than double the collections profitability of one of the top five credit card companies in the U.S. In addition, Dr. Kahn's knowledge of database marketing, statistical modeling, and data mining makes him a sought-after speaker. He routinely lectures at the Data Warehousing Institute and has been a keynote speaker at Columbia University and the SAS Data Mining Conference.

"Companies are going to increasingly outsource the management and analysis of customer data, because the infrastructure and tools necessary for effective, real-time analytics are incredibly specialized," said John Oltman, CEO of Seurat. "Seurat hired William Kahn precisely because he is at the leading edge of database marketing, statistical modeling, data mining and business process reengineering. At the helm of our Managed Analytics service, William will build a team of world-class experts to help our clients realize the full market value embedded in their customer relationships."

Seurat expects long-term managed analytics contracts to account for at least 30 percent of its revenue by 2004. Already, the company provides Seurat Suite services to many Fortune 500 clients. Large organizations such as these have the most to gain from managed analytics because of their huge customer bases. According to Kahn, this puts Seurat in a position to pioneer best practices and establish long-term market leadership for managed analytics.

Kahn's responsibility for building and managing the Managed Analytics service will include strategy development, operations, product and service development, sales, and client service delivery. He will expand the company's historical strengths in market research, customer satisfaction tracking and analysis, usability research, information architecture and business performance monitoring and measurement.

Kahn has both a bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in statistics from University of California, Berkeley. He earned his Ph.D. in statistics from Yale. He will be based in Seurat's headquarters location in Boulder, Colorado.
