M-Systems Raises Top Capacity of DiskOnChip To 1 Gigabyte

DiskOnChip 2000 is a family of modular flash disks available in standard packages. With its TrueFFS flash management technology, small size and solidstate operation, DiskOnChip provides a local storage solution for embedded systems, medical applications, automotive computers, connected devices, telecom, aviation and other applications that operate in harsh environments.

First introduced in 1997, it is designed specifically for applications where low power consumption and data reliability are critical.

"Many users of flash mass-storage devices are in a hurry to cut their time to market. This conflicts with the amount of time it takes for programmers to compress code," said Jim Handy, director of non-volatile memories at Semico Research. "With a large available code and data space, programmers can meet or beat their deadlines without running into space constraint problems."

When compared to other 1GB disk solutions, the new 1GB DiskOnChip 2000 flash disk product resides on a remarkably small 32-pin DIP socket, occupying a much smaller space. Using the TrueFFS advanced technology, the DiskOnChip 2000 has superior reliability, consuming less power. In addition, the wide operating system support and pin-out compatibility with previous DiskOnChip 2000 products makes it easy to upgrade.

"The increased capacity was designed to meet the needs of telecom, embedded and other applications where small size and dependability are a must," said Yigal Ben-Zeev, associate vice president of M-Systems. "The higher capacity DiskOnChip 2000, the smallest 1GB flash disk available in the market, will allow for a dramatic increase in the ability of new applications to locally store all of their software and data together on one small device.
