HURWITZ PREDICTS STORAGE MARKET TO BE $1.47B BY 2005

With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30%. Hurwitz Group defines SRM as software that manages storage resources from a capacity, utilization, policy, and event management perspective. It includes bill-back, monitoring, reporting, and analytic capabilities that allow drill-down for performance and availability.

"We see significant growth over the next few years, with accelerated growth in 2004 and 2005 based on the emergence of strong standards and vendor partnerships that lead to heterogeneous management and increased application integration," said Stephen Elliot, Director of Hurwitz Group's Systems, Applications, and Storage Management Practice. "SRM applications play an important role in helping storage and server administrators increase their storage architecture utilization. SRM technology advancements and increased integration will drive market adoption over the next two years."

The report also provides 2001 market share information and predictions for 2002. In 2001, EMC led the SRM market with 45.3 %; Computer Associates was second with 13.9%, and IBM was third with 6.3% -- narrowly edging out BMC Software with 6%. A number of smaller vendors proliferate in the SRM market, including Astrum Software, NTP Software, TeraCloud, Tek Tools, and Trellisoft -- and are projected to show market share increases in 2002.

"The SRM market is one of the fastest-growing storage management markets due to current market dynamics," Elliot said. "Users are looking for storage management products that offer cost savings opportunities through automation and policy management -- they need to get more from less. These factors make SRM tools the obvious choice for managing, reporting, and improving storage utilization."
