Short Takes - People & Positions:Avamar Names Kevin Daly Chief Executive OfficerAvamar Technologies, Inc., a provider of high availability storage software solutions for simplified management and protection of enterprise data, announced the appointment of Kevin Daly as Chairman and CEO of the company, effective immediately. Dr. Daly, former CTO of Quantum Storage Solutions Group, will be responsible for bringing Avamar's patent-pending technology to market later this fall. Avamar, whose software dramatically increases network and storage efficiency using a fundamentally different approach to data storage, was recently selected by Red Herring Magazine as one of the "Top 10 to Watch." Avamar received $12M in series C funding in April from Benchmark Capital, CMGI@Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Dr. Daly replaces Stephen Hansen, who served as Avamar's CEO since mid 2000 and led the company through its successful financing round earlier this year. Mr. Hansen will maintain a position on Avamar's Board of Directors. "Avamar's technology represents a major leap forward for the storage industry, and Kevin's experience will help establish the company as a market leader," said Mr. Hansen. "Kevin's extensive industry knowledge, relationships, and technical expertise will be significant assets as Avamar brings its innovative products to market." "Kevin is a dynamic leader, who has demonstrated the ability to grow a startup into a successful public company. In addition, Kevin is perhaps the most outspoken visionary on enhanced backup technologies in the business," said Bill Gurley, general partner at Benchmark Capital and a member of Avamar's Board of Directors. "I am extremely pleased to have Kevin at the helm to maximize the value of Avamar's breakthrough technology." As CTO of Quantum Storage Solutions Group, Dr. Daly created the Enhanced Backup Solutions Initiative (EBSI), a vendor-agnostic, industry coalition of storage companies dedicated to helping businesses better protect their mission-critical data. Prior to holding the CTO position, he was CEO of ATL Products, Inc., which was acquired by Quantum Corporation in late 1998 and operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary. While CEO of ATL Products, Dr. Daly led the company through a successful IPO and built the company's revenues to approximately $350M in its fiscal year of 2001. In addition, he grew the company from 17 to more than 800 people worldwide in 2001. Prior to leading ATL Products as a standalone company, Dr. Daly served as CTO for ATL while it was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Odetics, Inc., a technology company in Anaheim, CA. Dr. Daly received his MS, MA, and PhD in engineering from Princeton University. "I am tremendously enthusiastic to join the talented team at Avamar Technologies, particularly at this important point in the company's growth and development," said Dr. Daly. "Avamar's technology brings great value to the open systems data protection market by enabling organizations to take greater advantage of their existing storage, networking, and communication resources." Dr. Daly continued, "I believe that we are at the beginning of a second wave of innovation in the implementation of data protection solutions for open systems. This second wave will be driven by tremendous advances in the affordability of CPUs and disk-based storage as well as the rapid advances in networking technology, which will encourage the implementation of truly distributed IT environments. Data protection solutions in this environment will need to take full advantage of ubiquitous computational and storage resources, while making effective use of available networks to offer both traditional data protection and disaster recovery capabilities. Avamar's technology is ideally suited to play a leading role in enabling these solutions." Dr. Daly's appointment follows the recent additions of Maureen Ohara-Norris as vice president of engineering and Janae Lee as vice president of business development. Ms. Ohara-Norris joined Avamar from Legato Systems, where she successfully grew the engineering organization from 30 to 200 software developers and managed a cross-functional development staff, including multiple engineering, quality assurance, documentation, and sustaining engineering groups. Ms. Lee also joined Avamar from Legato Systems, where she was responsible for leveraging Legato's storage software products through strategic partnerships and business development.
