Features - Enterprise Data Insights:NORTEL, EMC DEPLOY OPTICAL SAN FOR EASTMAN CHEMICALNortel Networks and EMC Corporation have deployed an optical storage area network (SAN) business continuity solution for Eastman Chemical, one of the world's largest suppliers of plastics, chemicals and fibers. This solution is designed to provide virtually instant, enterprise-wide access to information in the event of an outage, while positioning Eastman Chemical to drive lower overall IT costs. "Since its implementation, the EMC and Nortel Networks solution has significantly improved availability of information to our customers and employees and has enabled us to consolidate -- and significantly reduce -- the more than 1,600 NT and UNIX servers in our infrastructure," said Lee Reid, manager, Global Computing and Telecommunications Services, Eastman Chemical. "EMC Global Services conducted a detailed assessment of our entire storage infrastructure and proposed a comprehensive business continuity solution using Nortel Networks DWDM technology," Reid said. "Eastman Chemical now has a storage infrastructure that both ensures the highest levels of information protection and yields exceptional return-on-investment." Eastman Chemical customers in the United States and Canada place orders and track shipments 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The new solution from Nortel Networks and EMC is designed to complete these transactions quickly and reliably, even in the event of a major network or data center outage. The solution connects Eastman Chemical's three data center locations in a ring topology extending more than 30 miles to address fundamental IT challenges, such as business continuity and information consolidation. "We also are implementing much of the software under EMC's AutoIS strategy," Reid said. "The automation and centralized management characteristic of AutoIS will help us keep management costs flat as our infrastructure continues to grow in complexity." Nortel Networks DWDM technology has positioned Eastman Chemical to extend its storage network cost-effectively across a metropolitan area while significantly increasing bandwidth per fiber. The backbone of Eastman Chemical's optical SAN-based business continuity solution includes Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 Multiservice Platform, EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems, EMC SRDF (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) software and EMC TimeFinder software. Nortel Networks is focused on extending the benefits of networked storage and breaking through the barriers that limit widespread deployment of storage solutions: distance, interoperability, scalability, capacity, and protocol transparency. Nortel Networks is an industry leader in the transport of SAN traffic across the metro, carrying more than 200 petabits of mission-critical traffic per day. A recent report from IDC estimated that Nortel Networks had approximately 80 percent of the metro DWDM optical storage connectivity market for 2001.
