Features - Storage Innovations:VSCode BRINGS HIGHEST DATA CAPACITY IN TWO DIMENSIONAL CODEVeritec Inc and VIVI (Veritec Iconix Ventures Inc) have announced the development of a new high-density 2D code, the VSCode symbology. The VSCode symbol provides the world's highest density printable 2D code. The VSCode can store 4.45 Kbytes (approximately one page of printed text) in a 3/4 inch by 3/4 inch space. The code is machine-readable. Along with development of the VSCode symbology, the two companies have developed high speed-reading algorithms. VIVI, www.vi-vi.com, headquartered in Osaka, Japan, has filed a patent on the new technology. "With our technology enhancements, our customers are able to more than double the data capacity within a two-dimensional (2D) matrix code format," stated Mass Kuriyama, CEO of VIVI. "VSCode has demonstrated four times the data capacity as claimed by PDF417, and double that of DataStrip." The VSCode symbol is of particular interest for high-density code applications. Security cards, which contain biometric data, require hundreds or thousands of bytes of data, and must fit in the small spaces available on an issued identification card. In addition, mail ordering, production management, and logistics operations have been demanding increased capability within a code. The VSCode format allows entire product contents, lot numbers, origin information, and routing information and instructions to be placed within a sticker or directly on a product or in a catalog. "We are excited to be able to offer the world's best code -- in terms of capacity and speed," said Van Tran, CEO of Veritec. "With the immediate availability of software, reading devices, and our support services in the US and Asia, customers can expand the benefits of coding information directly onto products or catalogs." As compared with a Universal Product Code (UPC) barcode format that is commonly used in retail sales, the VSCode has a two-dimensional format. In the UPC format, data is stored in bars that are scanned horizontally. Veritec, Inc is the patent holder on two dimensional matrix codes, which store data in both the horizontal and vertical directions. This increases the storage capacity by ten to one hundred times. The new VSCode expands further the capability of two-dimensional codes. The special features of the code include four solid borders, timing cells, and more data storage capacity. The features allow for simplified algorithms, resulting in faster decoding. VSCode can be sized to fit an application, based on amount of data that needs to be stored and the space availability. VSCode format can be selected to be rectangular, in order to fit in narrow spaces on product, identification cards, or catalogs. Veritec Inc, www.veritec-inc.com, a pioneer in two-dimensional matrix coding technology and owner of several patents on two-dimensional codes, is a leading developer of proprietary software that exceeds industry standards (including the patented VeriCode symbol). Veritec manufactures high-density, high-speed encoding (VeriWrite) and decoding (VeriRead) software and tracking systems that allow end-users to produce and interpret coded data to protect, monitor and maintain products and services from production to tracking in the field. Veritec is a public company, headquartered in Minnesota. For more information, contact Veritec at 1163 Kruse Street, West St. Paul, MN 55118, telephone 651-552-9215; or e-mail info@veritecinc.com.
