Short Takes - On The Market:

Exabyte Introduces New Vxa-2 Automation Products

Exabyte Corporation, a performance and value leader in tape backup systems, has announced the premier of VXA-2 tape drives in two of its market-leading automation products: the entry-level Exabyte AutoPak 1x7 tape autoloader and the mid-range Exabyte 430 tape library. These are the first Exabyte automation products to feature VXA-2, dramatically increasing the capacity and performance available to tape users who seek an alternative to DDS technology at similar price points for drives, automation and media.

The Exabyte AutoPak 1x7 tape autoloader with VXA-2 provides highly affordable and convenient automated data storage in a compact design that fits on any desktop. The AutoPak 1x7 accommodates a single VXA-2 drive and seven data cartridges in a removable magazine. The AutoPak 1x7 utilizes world-renowned Exabyte robotics for automating backup procedures, eliminating operator error and dramatically cutting data management costs. Delivering over 1TB of storage capacity at transfer rates up to 43.2GB/hr, the AutoPak 1x7 rewards users with industry-leading capacity and affordability.

The Exabyte 430 tape library with VXA-2 is an ideal automated storage solution for data-intensive networks, providing up to 4.8TB of compressed data storage in a compact, rack-mount configuration that maximizes customers' valuable data center space. The 430 with VXA-2 accommodates up to four VXA-2 tape drives and 30 data cartridges, offering Exabyte's customers the flexibility to configure the tape library to meet their specific storage needs. Tape drives in the 430 tape library are field-replaceable, allowing for ease of service and the ability to upgrade to future-generation drives, further protecting the user's investment. "Availability of the AutoPak 1x7 and 430 with VXA-2 means that our customers can now get two of our most popular automation products with VXA-2 technology, offering far more capability than other entry-level automation solutions," said Tom Ward, president and CEO at Exabyte. "VXA-2 has more than twice the data rate and four times the storage capacity of DDS-4, plus full read-and-write compatibility with VXA-1. This protects the investment of users who have already chosen VXA technology, and gives DDS users a replacement with a lot more performance at the same price point."

The Exabyte AutoPak 1x7 with VXA-2 has an MSRP of $3,299 and will be available in October 2002. The Exabyte 430 with two VXA-2 drives has an MSRP of $11,357 and will be available in September 2002. First introduced in 1999, award-winning VXA tape products offer a unique combination of reliability, performance, and value. VXA drives are the ideal replacement for drives based on the popular DDS tape technology, which has reached the end of its product roadmap. The ending of the DDS roadmap means that millions of DDS users must migrate to alternative tape backup technologies. VXA offers them the ideal solution with higher capacity and performance at the same price point as DDS. VXA also offers superior reliability, based on an innovative read/write architecture with a highly reliable Internet-like packet format, designed for 100% data restore. The published VXA roadmap extends through several generations into VXA-4, ensuring long-term protection of users' investments in drives and media. Higher capacities and unattended backup are available with Exabyte's VXA AutoPak product line, a family of low-cost entry-level tape automation devices featuring the VXA technology.
