SGI AND LSI DEMONSTRATE DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AT IBC 2002

High-performance storage and computing technology leaders, LSI Logic Storage Systems and SGI, will demonstrate their commitment to the media industry through a comprehensive storage area network (SAN) solution featuring film restoration and video-on-demand (VOD) applications at the 2002 International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam.

With an SGI SAN Server 1000 storage system connected to a Silicon Graphics Octane2 visual workstation running MTI (Mathematical Technologies Inc) film restoration software, the solution allows high end post-production companies to accelerate production workflow on an open systems technology platform. An SGI Origin 300 server connected to the SAN will also demonstrate Kasenna MediaBase software for on-demand and live video delivery services.

"The joint solution being demonstrated at IBC has been designed to meet the demanding bandwidth and post-production requirements of the media industry and also show how video-on-demand applications can be powered from the same solution -- making it a cost-effective investment," said Chris Golson, senior director, Media Industries, SGI. "When sending large blocks of data such as 8- and 10-bit film-resolution video files, the 2Gb Fibre Channel connectivity of the SGI SAN Server 1000 when combined with the high read/write performance of the LSI Logic Storage Systems array provides superior transfer speed."

The SGI SAN Server 1000 system integrates SGI CXFS software, one of the industry's fastest shared filesystems for SANs, with LSI Logic Storage Systems' advanced disk array technology to provide a media solution with heterogeneous file connectivity for Windows NT, Windows 2000, Solaris and IRIX operating systems.

LSI Logic Storage Systems' worldwide director of channel sales, Ken Bobek, said the open nature of the solution provides media customers greater flexibility when managing their content. "Many companies in the creative industry have selected turnkey solutions in the past, but this system developed by SGI and LSI Logic Storage Systems offers an open platform so customers are not locked into proprietary technology and can easily consolidate their storage," said Bobek.

The joint LSI Logic Storage Systems and SGI solution will be on display at IBC stand 9.331, at Amsterdam RAI, from September 13-17, 2002.
