Features - Financial Plays Of The Week:

GLOBAL LAW FIRM DEPLOYS EMC NETWORKED STORAGE

EMC Corporation has announced that Paul, Hastings, Janfosky & Walker LLP, a leading global law firm, is implementing an advanced EMC networked storage infrastructure to provide more accurate, efficient financial processing and to improve the protection and manageability of business-critical information. Paul Hastings, a recognized technology innovator, chose EMC over the competition because of EMC's superior reliability, advanced software and interoperability with other storage components.

Stova Wong, Paul Hastings' Director of Network and Telecommunications, said, "We chose EMC because of its leadership and deep experience in network storage and business continuity -- two areas critical to providing superior client service and running our firm in the most efficient way possible."

Paul Hastings is implementing an 18-terabyte EMC infrastructure to power the storage demands of critical systems, including document management, accounting, e-mail and litigation support applications. The EMC Symmetrix and CLARiiON storage area networks (SANs) utilize Fibre Channel switches to provide consolidated storage to Dell Windows NT and Hewlett-Packard Unix servers. Paul Hastings is using other EMC management software, including PowerPath and EMC Resource Pak for Windows, to simplify the firm's system management, and relies on EMC Celerra File Server to provide networked-attached storage (NAS) for image-based documents and other visual material that supports litigation.

When the EMC networked storage is implemented, its performance and flexibility will allow users to use the live system on a much more timely basis during each month-end closing cycle. As a global law firm, Paul Hastings has attorneys around the world accessing online systems for information that is critical to their casework. With EMC's advanced business continuity and information management software and expertise, the law firm can provide a resilient and secure infrastructure for their valuable information assets any time and anywhere.

Open Software

Paul Hastings is implementing EMC ControlCenter/Open Edition software, a central component of EMC's AutoIS strategy, to deliver significant advances in open storage management. Paul Hastings will use the software to centrally manage data residing on EMC Symmetrix and EMC CLARiiON SANs, as well as EMC Celerra NAS.

"EMC is clearly leading the charge toward more open, streamlined management of storage -- which is exactly where we want to be," said Wong. "EMC's ControlCenter/Open Edition will provide a clearer, more centralized view of storage in our SAN and NAS environments, which are spread across separate locations in the US, Asia and the UK. It also will increase our flexibility and control in moving storage around to support changing demands of our infrastructure. This increased visibility and control will lower the cost of doing business and allow us to be more responsive to the needs of our internal users and clients."

Business Continuity and Global Services

EMC Global Services is working with Paul Hastings to implement EMC's SRDF (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) software to provide remote data replication and disaster recovery between a primary data center and a strategic disaster recovery site. The law firm will rely on EMC TimeFinder software to create a backup copy of online production data online, which will be used to make software changes and test new applications.

"EMC's SRDF and TimeFinder software solutions are major components of our business continuity strategy," said Wong. "With SRDF, we will significantly reduce our recovery time from a major outage. We will use TimeFinder at our primary and recovery sites to lower our need for scheduled downtime and to get more utilization and return on investment in our disaster recovery facilities."

Frank Hauck, EMC's executive vice president of Customer Operations, said, "Paul Hastings is leading the legal profession in its deployment of advanced and innovative storage technologies and recognition that a strong networked storage implementation can bring immeasurable value and a competitive edge to its overall business. Since information is at the heart of every legal practice, Paul Hastings has chosen EMC's open storage management and business continuity to elevate information availability to an entirely new level."
