EMC Launches Next Major Wave of Open Software

Continuing to deliver ground-breaking open software under its AutoIS strategy, EMC Corporation has unveiled the newest generation of its ControlCenter family of intelligent supervision software -- including the world's first end-to-end automated storage provisioning software -- and key enhancements to its family of information safety software. Adding to the one of the world's broadest, deepest and most advanced ranges of open storage management software, this announcement extends EMC's lead in helping customers efficiently manage and automate complex networked storage environments and respond to business requirements with agility and speed.

Since the October 2001 introduction of AutoIS, thousands of customers have deployed EMC open storage management software to manage heterogeneous storage systems, networking components and server-based storage resources from a wide range of vendors. This announcement broadens that support and interoperability even further across EMC, HP, HDS, IBM, SUN, Network Appliance and others, and extends EMC's lead in making multi-vendor networked storage environments simple, automated, and open.

Joe Tucci, EMC president and CEO, said, "Today EMC unveils the next wave in helping customers simplify and automate their multi-vendor storage networks. To get there, customers know there are no short cuts. Promises mean very little to customers. Delivering means everything and it takes major commitment and resources. EMC has converted our early investments and leadership in storage management software into a clear lead in delivering open storage management. Our energies center around quickly giving customers the highest-quality, integrated products they need to lower management costs, increase control over their storage resources and quicken response time to changing business needs."

Bill North, Storage Software Research Director for IDC, said, "Customers today need software that can help them overcome the difficulties of managing storage in a multi-vendor networked environment. As a result, they're measuring vendors not just on their strategies, but on their ability to deliver real software solutions. EMC's position as the revenue market share leader in storage software reflects the company's success in delivering software that solves its customers' problems and supports the development of future storage software solutions."

Intelligent Supervision

The newly announced EMC intelligent supervision capabilities provide major productivity-boosting enhancements to the EMC ControlCenter family of integrated management software and a new hosted EMC application monitoring offering.

EMC ControlCenter is the industry's only fully integrated networked storage management family. ControlCenter comprises integrated applications that leverage a shared infrastructure to easily manage multi-vendor storage environments including storage devices, storage networks, and server-based storage resources. With a single point-of-control across applications, ControlCenter provides a common view to administrators, thereby reducing the number of steps needed to complete tasks, lowering the risk of human error, and shortening training times.

Ulrich Seif, CIO at National Semiconductor, said, "Our IT challenges don't start with technology -- they start with our business requirements. We view information technology as an opportunity to improve efficiency and productivity. For storage, we need to proactively evaluate our capacity needs, coordinate multiple management steps among staff, and rely on tools that can automate the whole process. EMC ControlCenter and new integrated applications will prove extremely valuable in this process."

New and enhanced ControlCenter applications include:

  • EMC Automated Resource Manager -- One of the world's first end-to-end automated storage provisioning softwares, Automated Resource Manager is the newest fully integrated EMC ControlCenter application. Automated Resource Manager automates the manual process of adding and reallocating storage resources -- from the storage array through the Storage Area Network (SAN) to the host computer. The software enables organizations to bypass the costly, error-prone manual process by quickly and easily defining and applying storage service-levels for specific application requirements and creating heterogeneous storage pools based on geography, application and functional organization.Automated Resource Manager supports both EMC and non-EMC storage devices, including EMC Symmetrix, EMC CLARiiON, and HP StorageWorks. Additional third-party storage support is in development.
  • EMC SAN Manager -- the industry's first fully integrated SAN management software. SAN Manager (formerly ESN Manager) now supports active management of HP StorageWorks arrays, in addition to prior active management support for EMC Symmetrix and EMC CLARiiON. SAN Manager also centrally manages network devices such as Brocade, McDATA, Qlogic and EMC Connectrix and enables zoning, discovery, and reporting for storage arrays from HDS, HP and SUN.SAN Manager leverages the ControlCenter shared infrastructure to integrate seamlessly with other storage management applications as well as to integrate with framework products such as HP OpenView, Tivoli Netview, Computer Associates Unicenter and Micromuse NetCool.
  • EMC StorageScope -- The world's only storage reporting software with full end-to-end correlation of utilization for storage devices, switches and server storage resources, EMC's powerful StorageScope reporting software now covers virtually any storage device. New support announced today includes HDS, HP, SUN and IBM systems as well as "JBOD" non-intelligent storage, internal server storage and storage network devices. This breadth of openness is added to prior StorageScope support for EMC Symmetrix, EMC CLARiiON, EMC Celerra, Compaq and NetworkAppliance systems.StorageScope now also provides an access interface to the data contained in the shared ControlCenter repository, enabling users to create customized resource utilization reports and to export StorageScope data to other applications.
  • EMC Common Array Manager -- enables customers to automatically discover multi-vendor storage arrays and monitor the status of the array, its disks and other sub-components. Previously supporting storage from HP, HDS, SUN, IBM, and StorageTek, the Common Array Manager device management software now also supports arrays from Network Appliance.

In addition, EMC also announced:

  • EMCLink -- a new, hosted EMC offering that provides application-to-storage monitoring to simplify problem identification and analysis. EMCLink offers expert tuning advice for Oracle and SQL Server Databases, Windows, SUN Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX and Linux Operating systems, and SAP R/3 and Microsoft Exchange applications. EMCLink delivers early warnings about potential performance and capacity problems, enabling IT managers to gain tighter control over their operations, make more informed resource decisions and reduce unplanned downtime.
  • EMC Replication Manager -- The industry's only replication management software, Replication Manager automates virtually every procedure related to data replication. New support announced today includes EMC CLARiiON and HP StorageWorks arrays, as well as support for SQL Server 2000, Exchange 2000, and UDB applications. This support is addition to existing Symmetrix system and Oracle application support.
  • EMC Data Manager(EDM) -- EMC's high-performance backup and recovery solution is enhanced to provide centralized management of multiple EDM systems, greatly simplifying backup administration tasks. In addition, EDM adds the industry's first automated event management engine for detecting and solving backup-related problems.

EMC's continued leadership in storage software centers around AutoIS, EMC's strategy for making networked storage environments simple, automated and open. Auto IS enables customers to overcome the complexity of multi-vendor storage systems through three initiatives: Intelligent Supervision to monitor, report, and control networked storage infrastructures and higher-level storage services; Infrastructure Services for the abstraction, presentation, and mobility of networked data; and Information Safety for data protection and recovery, ensuring the operational integrity of the business.

Major new EMC ControlCenter applications including Automated Resource Manager and SAN Manager, and enhancements to StorageScope and Common Array Manager will be available within 60 days. Replication Manager enhancements will be available in December. EMCLink and EDM enhancements are available immediately.
