XIOtech Corp And Nishan Systems Offer New SAN/WAN Solution

XIOtech Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Seagate Technology and a networked storage pioneer, and Nishan Systems, one of the world's first suppliers of native IP storage solutions, have announced the availability of a SAN/WAN solution. This solution is a tested and integrated end-to-end strategy that offers the benefits of a Fibre Channel (FC) SAN along with offsite data replication over an Internet Protocol (IP) network -- at an affordable price.

"It is critical for today's organizations to protect its data against all types of downtime -- both planned and unplanned," said Bob Passmore, research director for enterprise servers and storage, at Gartner. "A solution utilizing Fibre Channel over IP provides the basis for implementing an affordable and effective remote data replication strategy, without straining the IT budget."

FC is an outstanding choice for SAN connectivity, providing a high-performance conduit through which servers can access centralized data. IP allows companies to move data across the Internet, creating connectivity over much greater distances than traditional FC. This solution combines the performance of FC with the availability and connectivity of IP over long distances, to create an easy, affordable option for creating a wide area network (WAN).

"The business benefits of this solution are considerable," said Dan McCormick, vice president of worldwide marketing for XIOtech. "Benefits include consistent availability of data and applications, ease of use and manageability, and outstanding ROI. Servers and backup resources can be consolidated and a single switch provides FC and IP connectivity in a tremendously scalable and adaptive environment."

Combining the features and functions of XIOtech's software, its MAGNITUDE hardware platform, and Nishan's wire-speed IPS 4300 Multiprotocol Switch, companies can now implement a solution that provides affordable data center IP SAN scalability, integration with all Fibre Channel devices, and off-site redundancy.

"XIOtech's MAGNITUDE hardware platform is a great storage foundation for our Multiprotocol Switch networks," said Mark S. Hicks, vice president of business development at Nishan Systems. "The flexibility built into our switch is perfectly matched by the capabilities of the MAGNITUDE and its virtualization technology. Together we have a solution that practically eliminates planned downtime and ensures that data will survive a local disaster and can be restored quickly."

Rhapsody Delivers New Developer Kit For SAN-Based Storage

Rhapsody Networks has announced the general availability of its XPath Software Developer's Kit (SDK) and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for use by storage software application developers. The announcement represents the industry's first tool set for the standardization and easy migration of storage applications to run within storage area networks (SANs). Historically, storage applications have run on either server hosts or storage arrays, but the industry is moving to a more network-centric application paradigm in an effort to ease growing storage management complexities and associated costs.

"The rapid adoption of the XPath platform illustrates the growing industry interest in simplifying storage management by moving intelligence to the network," said Rhapsody Networks president and CEO, Mike Klayko. "More and more storage application providers and enterprises are embracing this vision, and we anticipate an even wider scope of recognition in the coming months."

Rhapsody's XPath API and services provide a rich storage application platform that supports a broad range of block storage capabilities, including virtual disk, virtual tape, copy-on-write snapshots, n-way mirroring, and online data migration, providing application developers a simplified and accelerated development environment. A number of industry-leading solution vendors have already endorsed the XPath development environment for virtualization, virtual tape and disaster recovery applications optimized for running within the network.

Rhapsody first collaborated with VERITAS Software, one of the leading storage software companies, to bring storage management software to storage networking environments, extending VERITAS' industry leading storage virtualization solution to the Rhapsody platform. The companies worked together through VERITAS Powered, a program that delivers embedded VERITAS storage software to networking hardware platforms.

"Organizations require flexible storage management solutions that allow them to manage complex storage networks with consistency, even as their needs change," said Robert Soderbery, vice president, business development, VERITAS Software. "Leveraging Rhapsody's XPath API enables the two companies to more quickly develop solutions that help companies better manage the performance and availability of their storage environments."

Alacritus Software, a leading provider of virtual tape emulation software, also selected the Rhapsody platform to develop its first SAN-centric storage application. "The value proposition of network-centric disk-to-disk backup is extremely compelling to the end user, and Rhapsody has created a superb platform for us to run on", said Don Trimmer, President of Alacritus. "Rhapsody's easy-to-use and flexible API allowed us to quickly adapt Securitus to Rhapsody's Storage Application Director."

Falconstor, Store-Age Networking Technologies and Topio also announced partnerships with Rhapsody last month, expanding the range of storage software available on the Rhapsody platform.

About the Rhapsody XPath Software Developer's Kit (SDK)

Rhapsody's XPath SDK and API services were designed to enable rapid migration of existing and new storage applications to run on Rhapsody's Application Director platforms by providing an all-inclusive development environment: platform API libraries, a run-time framework, reference documentation and sample applications. For more details on the Rhapsody XPath SDK/API services, please contact partners@rhapsodynetworks.com.
