CommVault Alternatives For Oracle Enterprise Environments

CommVault Systems Inc, a provider of unified enterprise data management solutions and a member partner of the Oracle PartnerNetwork, has announced new levels of data protection specifically for Oracle-based enterprises in version 4.1 of CommVault Galaxy data and storage management software. The Galaxy software provides Oracle enterprise environments with a wide range of alternatives to achieve the highest performance data protection, universal availability and simplified management of Windows-, UNIX and Linux-based enterprises. Specifically, the Galaxy software's new features for Oracle environments include:

  • The ability to perform "granular restores" of individual data files via RMAN solution, speeding the restoration of the most critical enterprise data and minimizing business disruption
  • Extended integration with SNAP-assisted backups with EMC, Compaq and Dell arrays, maximizing corporate return on hardware investment
  • Serverless backup, including block level incremental backup across Windows, UNIX and Linux Oracle deployments that practically eliminates I/O load on the database server while virtually eliminating "backup window"
  • Enhanced scalability and parallel processing capabilities to speed data backups and minimize downtime
  • Support for Oracle8i Database and Oracle9i Database on a variety of the most popular enterprise platforms, including AIX 4, AIX 5L, Tru64, HP-UX 11 and LINUX.
  • Restartable backup of Oracle9i Databases, CommVault supports RMAN's resumable backup feature. The addition of Oracle9i Database to the list of other restartable backup support in CommVault software, assure that shrinking backup windows can be met.

"CommVault and Oracle's Recovery Manager (RMAN) provides an integrated solution that protects your data while delivering superior performance and availability," says Roger Choplin, vice president of Data Storage Technologies at Oracle. "CommVault's announcement today of enhanced support for Oracle9i Database with Real Application Clusters offers an important new tool to Oracle enterprise environments seeking to restore data quickly with a reduced investment in the manpower previously required to perform restorations at the individual file level."

"Galaxy's ability to recover individual Oracle data files on demand offers us a tremendous opportunity to reduce the amount of time it takes to get our people back to work following a data loss or corruption," said of Dale Wishner, information technology and security manager, City of Ontario.

"With our announcement today of enhanced support for Oracle enterprises, CommVault extends Galaxy's benefits to a new and crucial sector of the enterprise marketplace," said Bob Hammer, CEO, CommVault Systems. "Of the series of steps we are taking this fall to extend Galaxy's role in the enterprise, we consider this particular milestone to be of particular strategic importance. We look forward to providing new levels of speed and simplicity to companies such as City of Ontario who are seeking to minimize both the 'human costs' associated with data administration, and the revenue lost when data can't be recovered quickly and easily."
