Features - Financial Plays Of The Week:FalconStor AND CRISTIE GO AFTER UK STORAGE MANAGEMENT MARKETFalconStor Software Inc, a leading provider of network storage infrastructure software, and Cristie Data Products have signed an agreement that, for the first time in the UK, will bring the enterprise-level benefits and capabilities of FalconStor's IPStor storage management platform to SME customers. Based around FalconStor's IPStor technology, Cristie has designed a range of hardware and software packages for the SME market, named GigaStream. Cristie's GigaStream range will bring many of the enterprise-level benefits of IPStor to organisations managing in the order of 0.5 TB of storage, with perhaps 100 network users, 5+ servers, and running database applications or generating lots of user files. Ian Cameron, managing director of Cristie, cites examples such as local government, universities, hospitals and medium sized businesses. Ian Cameron said, "GigaStream provides a highly cost effective solution for organisations looking at Fibre Channel SANs, but unable to justify the £50k plus they'd need to spend on getting one. GigaStream, and specifically the IPStor element of it, enables them to use their existing or a new Gigabit Ethernet as their storage network. Or, if they want or already have FC, that is equally no problem and they can migrate to FC at a later stage." Each GigaStream appliance comprises a hardware and software combination. A rack-mounted server running IPStor is common to each option in the range, with different storage array options and capacities contributing to the different variants. The storage array can be SCSI or FC connected and can use ATA, SCSI or FC hard drives. Among the optional benefits that IPStor contributes to GigaStream are Synchronous Mirroring, Backup Enabler, TimeMark, TimeView and Active-Active High Availability. Storage consolidation and virtualisation are standard features. All storage is provisioned and managed centrally via IPStor's Java console. David Parker, UK sales director for FalconStor, said, "IPStor in GigaStream to IPStor is like a Mini to a BMW: they're from the same manufacturer, and engineered to the same exacting standard, but have different levels of features and are priced accordingly. FalconStor acknowledges that smaller organisations face exactly the same 'growing-storage' issue as larger organisations, and they shouldn't have to compromise on the quality of their storage management platform even though they may not need all the features."
