Intel Launches Low-Power Celeron For Storage Gear

Intel Corp recently introduced a lower-power Celeron microprocessor aimed at low-end storage devices, as one of the world's largest chipmakers seeks to boost revenue beyond its bread-and-butter market, the PC industry.

Intel, based in Santa Clara, California, said the processor, a low-power-consuming Celeron, runs at a clock speed of 400 Megahertz. Intel's fastest microprocessor -- used in desktop PCs -- runs at 2.8 gigahertz, or 2.8 billion cycles per second.

The chip, available immediately, costs $38 in quantities of 1,000 and is designed to run smaller, lower-power-consuming items, in which there isn't space for fans to cool the devices, Intel said.
