Storage Area Networks To Present At ESRI Defense Conference

Storage Area Networks has announced that SANZ will present "Implementing Networked Storage Infrastructure for Managing Spatial Data" at the upcoming ESRI Defense User Group Conference to be held Nov. 5-6 in McLean, VA.

Greg Secrist, senior GIS storage systems engineer, and Tom Groom, GeoSpatial product manager, both of Storage Area Networks Inc, will be making the presentation. The ESRI Defense User Group forum is designed for defense and intelligence software users to find solutions to technical issues and to effect technology enhancements for defense applications in Geospatial software.

The SANZ presentation defines and describes the benefits of implementing unique networked storage architectures for effectively managing raster and vector datasets for GIS (Geographic Information Systems) applications used in defense. Key points include:

  • How to design security and disaster recovery strategies for spatial datasets. Disaster recovery is often difficult and costly to implement on large datasets using traditional technologies.
  • How IT organizations should manage the unique challenges of increasing imagery datasets and effectively distribute the data in a mission-critical environment.
  • How advances in storage management will allow agencies to securely share information while maintaining control of their assets.
  • Examples of defense agencies using networked storage infrastructure for storing GIS information assets due to their lower cost, flexibility and potential for increasing system performance.

Mark Hardy, director of Geospatial Products and Services for Storage Area Networks, commented, "At present, most armed forces and defense organizations continue to rely on paper maps as the principal tool for understanding terrain.

"As computer systems and digital information becomes a more important decision support tool, users will need a Geospatial Information System to manage and interpret the data. Our EarthWhere product family combined with ESRI's software technology can deliver that solution today and will be highlighted at the conference."
