ADIC BOOSTS PERFORMANCE/CAPACITY OF SDLT LIBRARIES BY 45%

Advanced Digital Information Corporation, a leading supplier of Intelligent Storage solutions for the open systems market, has announced the industry's broadest range of automated tape libraries using Quantum Super DLT 320 drives, and the first SDLT 320 libraries designed with integrated storage networking support to improve the performance and reliability of SAN backup.

ADIC's SDLT library systems will boost their capacity and throughput by 45% using the new high-capacity, high-performance SDLT 320 drive technology, providing enterprise IT managers the performance and density needed to handle their rapidly growing data. ADIC's SDLT 320 product line will include the industry's highest capacity automated storage libraries, with native capacities ranging from 2.4 terabytes up to 7.5 petabytes, and throughput of 32 MB/second per drive (at average 2:1 compression). The libraries also offer backward compatibility with existing DLT media. This allows users to integrate the new technology easily into their current data storage environments and to protect their existing investment in DLTtape technology.

"IT managers continue to be faced with the mandate of keeping expenses under tight control while keeping pace with incessant data growth," explained Bill Britts, ADIC executive vice president of Sales and Marketing. "ADIC libraries with SDLT 320 technology provide the perfect solution. They deliver leading performance and capacity, provide compatibility with earlier DLT technology, and integrate the kinds of management features and storage networking support that make backup faster, more reliable, and more easily managed. The bottom line is better and more cost-effective data protection."

"Quantum and ADIC have a long history of working closely together to deliver leading-edge data protection solutions and these ADIC SDLT 320 libraries will continue that tradition," said Andy Grolnick, Quantum, vice president, marketing, DLTtape Group. "Super DLT is the most advanced tape technology available to the market, offering customers the highest performance, reliability, capacity and density to protect their business data. Inside ADIC libraries, this technology provides enhanced data protection and value for enterprise IT departments."

Scalar Library Line

The first models to ship with the new drive technology are ADIC's Scalar series libraries, all of which feature innovative scalability and built-in support for storage network environments.

The Scalar 24 is the first compact library to offer full enterprise-class data protection at entry-level prices. It includes the latest Super DLTtape drive technology, scalable management, a guaranteed capacity upgrade path, and integrated storage networking options, all at a price that can save users 30% or more on backup costs. It is available with one or two Super DLTtape drives and 21 media slots.

The Scalar 100 is among the industry's most dense mid-range, rack-mountable libraries, providing up to 6 Super DLTtape drives and from 15 to 60 cartridges in only 14 standard rack units (24.5 inches). It allows users to save time and money by adding their own capacity and performance upgrades in minutes without reconfiguring their rack systems.

The Scalar 1000 scales from 118 to 788 cartridge positions -- over 250 TB capacity with normal 2:1 compression -- and from 1 to 48 Super DLTtape drives. It was the first data center-class library to couple high-performance, barrier-free system growth with storage networking support that improves the performance, reliability, and manageability of SAN backup.

The Scalar 10K is the first library designed to support enterprise-scale backup consolidation. It offers the industry's first capacity-on-demand scalability, a proven high-availability architecture, and it features a full suite of integrated storage network management and connectivity capabilities. The Scalar 10K libraries support from 700 to 8,014 SDLT media cartridges and up to 324 drives.

Quantum Corp's new SDLTtape 320 technology provides 160 GB (native) capacity per cartridge and 16MB/second (native) throughput per drive, boosting current SDLT 220 marks by 45%. Super DLTtape technology is designed to seamlessly integrate into existing systems, offering backward-read compatibility with multiple generations of DLT1, VS80, DLT 4000, 7000, and 8000 series drives, and backward read/write compatibility with SDLT 220 technology.
