VICOM DEVELOPS LONG DISTANCE DATA MIGRATION

Vicom Systems Inc, a premier provider of storage network management technology, announced that the company has created with LightSand, a pioneering developer of High Performance Wide Area Storage Networks, a long distance data migration system that uses synchronous mirroring technology to quickly and reliably replicate large amounts of data over distances up to 8000 kilometers. The jointly developed solution was demonstrated at Storage Networking World in Orlando.

During the demo, Vicom showed the ability of its Data Migration Engine (DME) to perform live block-level data migration over 8000 kms -- the longest distance yet recorded. The long-haul heterogeneous migration is enabled by LightSand's S-600 Gateway, which seamlessly transports Fibre Channel protocol over WAN topologies like SONET, DWDM and dedicated fiber.

The Vicom DME combines industry-leading software and hardware in a self-contained, transportable, rack mounted package. End-users are able to safely transfer their legacy data while maintaining access to their existing stored data. Features of Vicom DME include the ability to migrate data between heterogeneous systems attached to multiple hosts; fail-back protection in the event of an unplanned interruption; no agents or HBA intrusion into the host system; multi-channel migrations for optimal performance; and a scaleable, tunable system that optimizes access to data and migration performance.

The LightSand S-600 SAN extension gateway transports all of the data and fabric management signaling needed to effectively migrate large amounts of data between remote sites. The S-600 can move this information thousands of kilometers at speeds up to 622 megabits per second over existing SONET infrastructure, dedicated fiber or DWDM.
