Top Of The News - Hardware:Spinnaker Adds NDMP 2.0 Compliance To SpinServer 3300Spinnaker Networks Inc, a leader in developing next-generation, distributed NAS storage systems, has announced that its SpinServer 3300 is fully NDMP 2.0 compliant, simplifying backup among multiple SpinServer installations. NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) meets an enterprise IT manager's strategic need to centrally manage and control distributed data, while minimizing network traffic. NDMP, as an embedded protocol, separates the data path and the control path, so network data can be backed up locally yet managed from a central location, streamlining and lowering the cost of managing network storage resources. NDMP allows administrators to back up critical data using any combination of SpinServer 3300s and compliant backup devices and software. The addition of NDMP support enables SpinServers to be utilized as part of a LAN-free backup strategy using third-party NDMP software applications. LAN-free backup removes backup traffic from the network, eliminating the impact on regular network traffic and improving backup performance and reliability. To date, Spinnaker has certified Veritas NetBackup DataCenter software, Quantum's SDLT220, Dell's DLT1, IBM's 3580 Ultrium LTO and Hewlett-Packard's Surestore Ultrium 230 tape drives, and StorageTek's L20 LTO-based tape library for NDMP backup and restore operations with the SpinServer 3300. "NDMP is a critical management tool for all administrators charged with protecting NAS-based data assets," said Jeff Hornung, Spinnaker Networks' vice president of Marketing. "NDMP backup allows network administrators to efficiently backup SpinServer data, while minimizing the impact of backup traffic and enabling the use of existing backup hardware and software." As part of the company's commitment to support open standards and interoperability, Spinnaker is a sponsor of the NDMP initiative. For more information on NDMP, visit www.ndmp.org. Spinnaker's SpinServer 3300 product line is a revolutionary NAS storage solution that eliminates the complexities of storage management inherent in traditional NAS architectures, while offering unprecedented capacity and performance scalability for both NFS and CIFS environments. Combining a switched Gigabit Ethernet zero-bottleneck clustering design with SpinFS, a unique 2-stage distributed file system, the SpinServer family does away with the NAS island nature of current NAS products. It enables management of up to 512 SpinServers in a cluster as a single global storage pool, dramatically reducing the time, complexity and cost of effectively managing large-scale NAS storage assets. The SpinServer 3300 combines the benefits of an Ethernet-based NAS solution with the power of a unique two-stage distributed file system. Separating network and disk-related functions, the SpinServer architecture provides high performance and high capacity storage, while enabling centralized management of large, global (including multi-server) file systems. Simple to deploy, scale, and manage, the SpinServer family of products helps organizations meet expanding demands for storage, and simultaneously reduce management costs, improve storage-dollar ROI, and virtually eliminate access downtime. About Spinnaker NetworksSpinnaker Networks Inc, a leader in the development of next-generation NAS storage solutions, delivers the Spinnaker SpinServer, a powerful 2-stage distributed storage system. The SpinServer 3300 allows cost-effective, non-disruptive management of multiple servers as a single storage pool, which significantly reduces management costs and complexity. Spinnaker products are standards-based, which include NFS, CIFS, NDMP, SNMP and CIM, to provide efficient management and ensure interoperability among diverse computing and storage environments. Founded in December 1999, Spinnaker Networks is a privately held company with more than 100 employees headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company has secured $51 million through two series of funding rounds. Spinnaker was named one of UPSIDE Magazine's "Hot 100," which recognizes private companies for innovation, leadership and performance. For more information, visit www.spinnakernet.com.
