TELAINE INTRODUCES FIRST AGENT-LESS CIM RESOURCE MGMT TOOL

Telaine LLC has announced Telaine Observer, the first agent-less CIM tool for storage resource management.

Based on the Common Information Model standard endorsed by every major storage, network, FC switch and system manufacturer, Telaine Observer enables IT professionals to employ an agent-less solution to discover, manage and track storage resources across the enterprise. Telaine enables companies to quickly and accurately assess, consolidate and manage enterprise resources for more immediate returns on investments using agent-less solutions running over IP networks.

"Telaine Observer takes the guesswork out of storage management, and can offer significant returns in a matter of days, rather than months," said Terry McCarthy, Telaine chief technology officer.

Network administrators need only load Telaine Observer onto one workstation, and designate the range of IP addresses to probe. The software then auto-discovers all the resources residing on systems on the network. Results are available in minutes, and the administrator can use the intuitive GUI to customize the application to report on locations, capacities and rate of growth or usage decline.

Agent-based processes are expensive and time consuming to implement, and are rarely completely implemented due to resource and business constraints, the need to know the existence and location of all machines, and required access privileges. The CIM standard eliminates the need for administrators to load software agents on workstations and servers throughout the enterprise.

Telaine Observer includes functions for agent-less auto-discovery, trend analysis, and capacity planning. These capabilities can enable companies to save money by consolidating storage and server environments, reallocating unused storage from one environment to another, eliminating additional storage purchases. It also delivers a comprehensive understanding of storage assets for business continuance planning.

Telaine draws on its founders' expertise in Directory Services such as LDAP, as well as CIM technology. Slava Frid, co-founder and vice president of development, said that CIM technology literally takes storage management 'out of the stone age' in terms of cost-cutting capabilities.

"A dynamic environment might have a rapidly changing storage capacity, and administrators tend to just purchase more capacity," said Frid. "Agent-less technology can report in one day what other SRM tools take months to assess."

Telaine Observer is administrator configurable, with a flexible scheduling mechanism enabling administrators to monitor storage by physical group, logical group or virtually any other grouping. Alerts can vary from a simple notification that a disk is nearly full to 'rate of change' or decline in use alerts.

Telaine Observer Version 1.0 supports Sun Solaris 9, SUN Solaris 8, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT and is available now directly from Telaine at www.telaine.com. Future versions will support AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Mac OS/2 and Netware.
