STMicroelectronics INTRODUCES FlexibleROM

STMicroelectronics has introduced a new family of electrically programmable ROMs that can be used as drop-in replacements for any ROM device. Called FlexibleROM, the one-time programmable family is available in densities starting from 16-Mbits and is manufactured in the Company's leading-edge 0.15um process technology. The devices are optimized for basic code storage applications, including consumer products like games, DVD players and televisions, as well as office automation equipment and computer peripherals.

The FlexibleROM family has all the necessary features to replace Mask ROMs and provides great benefits in terms of flexibility and cost of ownership optimization.

Available in blank and pre-programmed versions (pre-programming is free-of-charge), the pre-programmed option enables a significant improvement in turn around time. By programming with customer code at the end of the production flow, the cycle time is greatly reduced (two weeks) compared to that of Mask ROMs.

Thanks to Flash-based technology, the programming time has also been heavily reduced. The FlexibleROMs are equipped with a typical multi-word program capability for large streams of data, which allows the programming of the 64-Mbit device in only nine seconds.

Another advantage over other one-time programmable ROMs is the programming yield, as 100% of the memory array functionality is verified during testing. The FlexibleROM family operates from a supply voltage of 2.7V to 3.6V for read operations, and an 11.4V to 12.6V supply for programming. The devices are organized as x16-bit and on power-up the memory defaults to its Read mode so it can be read as a ROM or EPROM.

Commercial samples of the M27W016 (DIL or SM package) and M27W064 (SM package) are available and production is running. Production of the M27W032 (SM package) is planned for Q1 2003, while the 128-Mbit and 256-Mbit versions will be available during 2003.
