Features - Financial Plays Of The Week:

COMMVAULT AND RHAPSODY NETWORKS FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

Rhapsody Networks, the industry's first provider of intelligent fabric application switching platforms, and CommVault Systems have announced a strategic agreement that brings together Rhapsody's intelligent fabric application switches for storage applications and CommVault's industry-leading data and storage management software. The companies said the agreement would speed the availability of tools for today's data intensive organizations to protect its mission critical data residing in storage area networks (SANs).

"Over the course of the past year there has been a trend to find the 'killer apps' that belong in the fabric to gain efficiencies, performance and ease of management," said Steve Kenniston of the Enterprise Storage Group. "Both CommVault and Rhapsody are very focused to identify which components of information lifecycle management (ILM) belong in the fabric and aim to lead the market with these applications."

Under the multi-pronged agreement, CommVault's Galaxy backup and recovery software will be migrated to Rhapsody's XPath API, a rich architecture enabling movement of storage applications into the fabric at a port level. Together, the solution will provide enterprise customers with dynamic data and storage management solutions that deliver snapshot-assisted backup, snapshot management and rapid data movement within a SAN -- ingredients that ensure unparalleled data availability, lower TCO and improved ROI.

The companies also intend to certify Rhapsody's intelligent switch on Galaxy as well as with a third party application working with Galaxy. CommVault's Galaxy is the industry's only storage management solution based on logical views of data, as opposed to traditional -- and more limiting -- physical views of data available today.

"This agreement is predicated on the anticipated efficiencies of putting storage optimized applications such as Galaxy directly into the fabric -- a trend that is gaining real momentum in the industry," said W. Curtis Preston, president of The Storage Group, and author of the books Unix Backup and Recovery and Using SANs and NAS. "Both CommVault and Rhapsody have a very clear and focused aim to lead the market with scalable backup and data protection applications in the fabric."

"Our partnership will strengthen the Rhapsody platform by adding core data and storage management functionality and creating the kind of value-added, end-to-end solution enterprise customers expect from next generation storage area networks," said Mike Klayko, president and CEO of Rhapsody Networks. "CommVault's adaptation of Galaxy with our platform is yet another key endorsement of the XPath API as the leading technology for bringing intelligence into the SAN."

"CommVault is choosing Rhapsody's technology to accelerate customer deployment of our dominant backup and recovery solution on the industry's first intelligent fabric application platform," said Bob Hammer, president and CEO of CommVault. "This agreement is significant to CommVault because we recognize Rhapsody's growing leadership in intelligent fabric application platforms for storage enterprise customers."
