Features - Storage Innovations:VERITAS SOFTWARE DOUBLES DB2 DATABASE PERFORMANCE ON AIXVERITAS Software Corporation, the leading storage software company, has announced the availability of VERITAS Database Edition for DB2 for the first time on the IBM AIX platform. VERITAS Database Edition for DB2 integrates core volume management and file system technologies specifically optimized to make DB2 databases perform up to two times faster, more highly available and easier to manage. Using VERITAS Database Edition for DB2 helps database administrators to meet demanding service-level expectations while reducing the cost and effort of managing growing amounts of data. The product joins an extensive suite of VERITAS storage software for the IBM AIX platform. "As DB2 gains ground in the distributed database market, it is increasingly used in mission-critical environments with high service-level requirements," said Carl Olofson, program director, IDC. "DB2 customers have a growing need for simplified, optimized storage and around-the-clock availability solutions such as those provided by VERITAS Software." VERITAS Database Edition for DB2 offers raw partition performance and data integrity for databases stored in file systems, freeing administrators from the difficulties of managing raw partition databases. Using the product's cached VERITAS Quick I/O feature, DB2 performance is up to two times faster than the same database stored on a standard UNIX file system, and is comparable to or faster than raw partition database performance. VERITAS Database Edition for DB2 reduces database downtime by enabling administrators to reconfigure storage and data while the database is online, without disrupting user access. Using the VERITAS FlashSnap Option, database administrators can create point-in-time copies of the data to use for business-critical operations such as data analysis or backup, without affecting production database performance. The HA version of the product integrates the industry's leading clustering and high availability software, VERITAS Cluster Server, to further reduce downtime and help ensure that critical databases are always available. "VERITAS and IBM have been working together for some time to deliver software-based solutions for enterprise storage," said Mark Bregman, executive vice president of product operations, VERITAS Software. "Today's announcement is the latest result of that collaboration, and extends the reach of VERITAS solutions in both the AIX and DB2 markets." VERITAS Database Edition for DB2 on AIX joins an extensive family of application-aware storage solutions from VERITAS, including VERITAS Database Edition for DB2 on Solaris. By enabling DB2 administrators to use common tools to manage databases and making data files more accessible and portable, VERITAS Database Edition supports the goals of the VERITAS Adaptive Software Architecture. The VERITAS Adaptive Software Architecture reduces data center risk, complexity and cost by supporting an IT infrastructure that is independent of specific platforms, applications, devices, or network configurations. Pricing and AvailabilityVERITAS Database Edition for DB2 on the AIX platform is available today, with pricing starting at $3,195.
